Adopted a rabbit yesterday

if ya ever need any help with explainations of what to look for in an "ideal holland lop", questions about breeding, colors, medication, feed etc, dont be afraid to send me an email at [email protected]. I just got out of showing/breeding hollands (opened). My best friend still shows/breeds hers, and I'm raising my last holland lop does baby to weaning and then she's free leasing my doe (she's my favorite girl so I want her back ha ha) and she gets to keep the baby. The babies sire cost $150. The babies dam I raised myself, and the dams dam cost me $50. I know this is just your childs project for 4H but I nkow some rabbit 4hers get very serious about showing high quality stock...and you dont HAVE to pay big bucks to find show worthy hollands, but you can also buy some really horrible hollands that arent ideal for show some breeders breed only for pet homes and advertise for both show and pet homes not caring that they really aren't.

They make awesome pets though if raised well!

oh and by brown do you mean "chocolate' or "chestnut?"

Solid brown in color would be chocolate, light brown with black and lighter and darker shades of brown (wild looking rabbit color) is Chestnut agouti.

Can't wait to see pics of yours:)

Seymour got neutered Monday at work. To my suprise he only weighed 7 lbs. He's doing great but spent a few days in his cage. Wednesday he got a cage upgrade. It's funny b/c the whole thing is zip tied to my pier 1 pewter table that I've had for atleast 10 yrs. We never use it and I thought his cage would look great on it. Plus, It's very sturdy and isn't gonna collaspe when he acts crazy like a folding table would.

Here's a pic of his new cage.....I still haven't cut off the zip ties on the top. His litter box habits are awesome. I have his tiny cage in the floor for when he's out. It has a litter box in it and he uses it. He uses the litter box in his big cage:) He doesn't care to much for being picked up but getting better. I put a towel over him when it's time to come out or go back up.

Here he is when he meet Bindi my 8 yr old cat...she's been around bunnies before. It was my 3 legged cat we were worried about but Hana didn't try anything to run away.
His fur is funny looking b/c I shaved the top layer off where all the tree sap was

His favorite spot to lay...on the air vent under one of the bird cages

What is it for bedding in the last pics posted by duckyboys? Also what do most people use in the litter pan? I have been using wood pellets and they seem to work good, but my husband does not like the idea of our winter heat being used for bunny litter

I just wonder what other options i might have. For bedding i have been using paper that went through a shredder.

Your new little boy looks like a Castor Rex. Is his fur velvety or his whiskers curley? If so, you've got a rex! Rex in general are extremely calm and love being around people. Standards can get up to 10 lbs, and mini-rex (which are a little more skittish) can get up to 6-7 lbs. My smallest mini-rex was 3 lbs full grown, and my largest mini-rex was 5 lbs. My standard rex doe weighs in at 8.5 lbs when she isn't pregnant, and one of my standard rex boys weighed in at 10 lbs before he passed.

Either way, he is gorgeous! Enjoy him and spoil him!

Oh no he's a holland. He has one leg of a GC and was a principle breeder for the girl we got him from. He's just older now and she has plenty of bucks (his sons) in her program.

The last cage has shavings in it, my daughter's bunnie is more messy than the other so she already had to clean the cage. The cages came with that recycled paper as litter, so my son still has it.

I haven't even read a book on rabbits yet, so pretty much I am clueless as to what will work best. I imagine that we'll use the shavings since we already have a bunch, unless there is some health reason not to. Paper shreddings sound like a good idea to me though, if I had a shredder I'd go for that!

I went and got the shredder just for this reason. our bunnies would fling the shavings all over and out of the cage. I find the shredder to be a good investment. We all have junk to put through it, its fun and it does work in the cage.
