Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Day 5 surprise! I decided to candle my 14 eggs today. They pretty much looked the same as at arrival - slightly wobbly air cells, and nothing going on...except -

The two Isabella Leghorn eggs have big red spiderwebs! So, either
-those eggs had started developing en route and are further ahead than the others
-those two are good and the other 12 are duds
or
-it's just a lot easier to see what's going on through a clean white shell than through a very porous brown one

Yesterday was Day 21 for my viable cochin eggs. I just candled and one appears to be trying to pip internally in the correct position, but I am TERRIFIED because the other chick is almost certainly malpositioned! Candling shows MOVEMENT at the SMALL END! Membranes are intact, but when this guy punctures the small end he will drown in excess albumin?!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!

So happy you have some spiderwebs! I am only on day two for mine in the incubator, anxiously waiting for them to do something.

Cute and happy continuation to my guinea hatching story. Because of historical hatch rates on shipped eggs I ordered 13 and actually hatched 12. Wasn't counting on that many but, oh well. My neighbor (maybe less than 1/4 mile from me) came by walking her dogs. I said I hope you don't get mad but the neighborhood is about to get a little more noisy. She said, "I am mad! Mad that you have guineas and I don't!!"
So now she is the proud owner of 6 new keets.

Keets in new home. :thumbsup

The neighbor asked me about chicken eggs. So I got a few more eggs from my buddy at work and now they are in the bator with peafowl eggs (the ones I drove 65 miles to pick up.) My shipped peafowl eggs from NJ didn't make it.:he They were not looking well when they arrived.
