Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

No change in the egg that pipped this morning, but the other 2 that pipped are now making their holes bigger and appear to be attempting to zip. If they hatch, I will check in the first pip.

Oh my luck!

The single remaining egg from Mississippi hatched. I should be happy....

I ordered 8 black eggs. She asked if I would take another color if she didn't have enough. I said blue/splash.

Received 8 black & 1 marked BS. None of the blacks even started to develop. All 8 we're thrown out as clear. The extra was the only to develop. It was the first to hatch (other eggs are from another breeder set on the same day)

We excitedly watched it hatch. Got a peek at the color. I think it will be splash. What blew my mind was the naked neck that popped out! I ordered silkies! . These are supposed to be breeding birds for my kids show birds.View attachment 1430254

Picture doesn't work... naked neck Silkies are apparently called 'Show-Girls'. I'm not a fan, myself, but a lot of people like them.

Yay, the 2nd pip from Florida hatched. It is black, and healthy. As much as I can see for now. Still no change in the first pip from last night. It had been 24 hours and I couldn't even see if it was breathing, so I took it out of the incubator to take a look since there's no other external Pips right now. It is alive, and just as we thought... The Low pip was supposed to be an internal pip. It is malpositioned. I peeled back some of the shell and part of the outer membrane so I could look at the intermembrane I saw veins still active so I put some coconut oil on it and put it back in the incubator. At least now I can see what's happening with it I can see its beak and know if it's alive.

I believe naked necks and Showgirls are two different types. The show Girls have an extra line of feathers on their neck like a feather boa. Don't quote me though I'm no expert, but I'm learning a lot fairly quick.

Not sure - most of the Show Girls I've seen didn't... but I know some naked necks have a 'bowtie' on their throat. It's not something I'd want to get - I'm not a fan of the look, but more, I'd be worried about them during winter.

Wish I had time to take a picture, but got up to check chicks as I am slowly helping the 1st pip out. About 3 hours ago I saw one had started to zip. Let it be and went back to bed. Got up now and the poor thing ad zipped, but couldn't get it's head or but out of the shell because of the carton. Then the shell dried to it with both it's legs sticking out. It couldn't move! Had to get it wet to pull the dried shell from it's feathers!

It's trying to walk around now. Poor thing will probably need a bath!

I have about 1/3 of the zipping done on chick #1. Being cautious cuz I am afraid of bleeding it out. Veins are pink, not red. I think I'm ok, but better safe than sorry. I will be up in a few more hours. 2 blacks from Florida now out, and the little surprise from Mississippi...
