I know - it's so tempting to catch, pet and coddle when they're so outgoing! I have had chickens for a very long time, and am still learning new things here on BYC.
Oh no, this boy just hung out on my lap, no catching needed.
And I thought... whoa I must be one of the lucky ones who got a friendly roo.
Looking back at 1 of dogs we got.... it kept coming over to us so we thought it chose us out of the pack of pups. Turns out that all in our face was just a confident pup who end up as a great guard dog eventually. (no longer with us) But now I know what seems like friendliness is confidence and therefor maybe more of a challenge in the future.
I wanted to be that special person with the awesome roo. Now I know the truth.... And I will have an awesome roo or two... they just won't be my lap pets. They will do what good roos do. Not what my imagination thinks good roos do.
And seriously... do I need ANOTHER chicken trying to hang out on my lap?!
It's not like they have dirty feet or anything. Or like my time is already short form the other 4 girls or so (out of 40) that like to come chat with me.
Looking forward my many more learning adventure! Got eggs in the bator right now.
Surprising with how good I am at numbers... that chicken math just crept up on me. My family is only 3. And I have no desire to make $. So I started out with 3 pullets. And have made it up to 48. Down to 40 now... but it's barely the beginning of the year... and there are at least a couple more breeds I'm antsy to get my hands on and try. At least a few of that 40 are on the future menu. But ya, exciting!
