Sorry, but,I TOTALLY disagree. This person NEEDS to be reported NOW to both local law enforcement & animal control, due to the fact that the beast broke INTO YOUR property & coop, killed your chicken(s) & tried to harm YOU, it is now considered a livestock killer & a DANGEROUS ANIMAL, it can be destroyed & YES, she IS responsible for ANY & ALL damages & any & all vet bills. This dimwit needs to be woke up the hard way & MADE to be responsible. WHEN, WHEN, WHEN will people realize that when they take on an animal, they assume ALL responsibility for ANYTHING their animal do. Remember, a dog on it's OWN property is a pet: on someone else's property a PREDATOR. I DO agree, you might want to see about re-enforcing your coop.

As far as I'm concerned, the dog is fair game when he comes onto my property. I MIGHT shoot to run it off at that point. If/when he starts nosing around my chickens, I'm shooting to kill. As to reinforcing your coop, that's up to you. I won't add an extra deadbolt to my door just because I think someone might break in. I'll find out what effect a 10mm hollow point has on soft tissue.

OP can report but playing all her cards at once will be counter productive. Dog owner, based on postings so far may effort to make right, I have done this a range of ways and found a cool head is the way to go. In the end it will not be just this dog and owner so a proactive approach is better than being a hot-headed reactionary that will ultimately be victimized repeatedly even when deadly force is used as retribution. Waiting for all dogs owners to adopt the exact policy you have is blatantly foolish and will not protect birds as well as simply upgrading coop design.

Chick the average person with a gun that uses it on bad guys does it most frequently to victims they know. With case of dog or other predator you have to be there and most of time you are not if you have a job or sleep.

It is a dogs instinct to an extent but a dog can be trained to control that. I have a choc lab that I trained to hunt and retreive birds with. I watched her lay still today as my hens walk right by her free ranging as I was on the porch. She was on the other side of a small weak fence that she could have gotten to them if she had really wanted to. She kept her eye on them but controled herself cause I've had to work with her and the chickens being around her. Sorry for your loss and hope you at least get compensated.

You're entitled to YOUR opinion, I'm entitled to MY opinion, calling me a hot-headed reactionary is NOT cool or necessary, just because I disagree with YOUR opinion. READ, what all the OP had to do to get this beast off of & out of the coop that it BROKE into, PLUS the fact that the beast broke into the yard & coop AGAIN, in FRONT of the owner & TOTALLY IGNORED said owner. I HAVE DONE what you suggested before when my flock was attacked, guess what, I got NADA, not even an I'm sorry. I'm NOT saying every dog owner is like that & there ARE a LOT of caring, responsible dog owners, but, unfortunately, there are way too many that don't care & the only way to get their attention is to bring the law down on them. If this offends you, I'm sorry, but I can & will defend my property & livestock from ANY & ALL predators & I DO have a VERY secure pen & coop, because of this VERY thing.

When I have gone into aggressive mode (without a doubt I am more imposing than you) very little payment was realized. When records kept and approach tactful I was paid more than I asked for and in one instance after I indicated I killed offending dog. Long-term relationship with dog owners as neighbors is desired, otherwise the abrasive big city mentality will prevail which means not caring and minding own business.

Your birds also more likely to be safe owing to investments in coop design that fear of you by dog owners and wildlife.

Glad it worked out for you, but, you don't know me or how "imposing" I can be, that being said, I had issues with neighbors dogs UNTIL I started reporting them to law enforcement & animal control, now NO more issues. I'm just saying that there's more than ONE way to handle situation, ONLY the one in the situation, knows the way to handle it, everyone has to do what they feel right. All I know is what has worked for me, where I live. Have a nice day.
