advice for buying breeding stock at shows

Columbus will have several thousand adult and young adult fowl there for sale from some of the very best breeders in USA and remember just like any other show you are subject to expose your fowl to disease.

I would try to go to a few shows before the show in Columbus to kind of get prepared, the show in Columbus will be a big one and could be a little overwhelming.

For the record we will be flying up for that show.

The people in Columbus started calling their show the Ohio Nationals in the 80's because they had a deal with the ABA to have the Nationals there every 3 years. They just call it the Nationals, although this year they will actually host the ABA Nationals.

Of course you do, you are in the egg selling business

Then the same goes for other quality breeders who also sell their eggs. There are many many, quality breeders out there who also sell excess eggs that they don't have room to incubate, or enough space to care for more chicks etc. Any money I do make from selling their eggs, goes directly back into the birds (food, bedding, etc). I find your statement very RUDE and ignorant! Plus, its much easier for me too sell hatching eggs, rather than to sell and ship live birds.

If you dont want to sell your eggs, I could care less, but dont go making generalized statements that every breeder who sells eggs is not a quality breeder. That is just wrong.

Having looked at your website, you could probably get offended by other things I have said. But I stand by them 100%
Lets just say we have a difference of opinion at what the definition of "Quality " means.

So roosters can't run with other roosters?

Large Fowl... Which is sad cuz I can find a ton of bantam breeders, and only 1 SPW breeder in LF... Urgh!

Very good information guys!!!

Someone mentioned "most" will be on the up and up, how do I know who is and who isn't? At horse shows we decorate our area with the barn colors and name... Do the chicken breeders do the same or are you just left out to guess??

I partially agree that most quality breeder don't sell lots of eggs or chicks but they do when they aren't hatching for themselves. Selling eggs can complicate things and many breeders don't have time to do it. I used to sell lots of hatching eggs through this site but now I have actually grown to prefer selling started birds and maybe a few chicks and eggs. I used to think that I could hatch 20 chicks and have my breeder for next year but if you really want to maintain the best birds you need to hatch 100's of chicks every year and select the best. I don't think all breeders that sell eggs are not good breeders or that their birds are poor quality. I do agree that if your not hatching enough chicks to select breeders for next year that are better then their parents your not a good breeder. I used to sell lots of eggs when I first started out but now that I am busy with school and other things I don't have the time to sell eggs.

I agree. Another thing is to always quarantine birds before adding them to your flock. I would quarantine a min. of 3-4 weeks. Also treat them for lice/mites just incase.
