Can anyone tell me if this is an infection or just an injury?
It is only on her right eye. The left eye is completely normal. She's not sneezing or coughing. It has some clear, bubbly looking drainage and no odor. It was swollen shut at first but I was able to get the eye opened. Now it is partially open. I could see her eye clearly after I opened it and it does not look damaged. She otherwise acts like her normal self. Any ideas on how I should treat it? I have her separated from my flock. The rest of the flock are fine.
Thank you in advance!

Can you see any evidence of a peck or sting? It's possible that it could be from a peck wound or injury, or an insect sting, but mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) can also cause swelling of an eye with foam or bubbles. It's good that you are not seeing nasal drainage, coughing/sneezing, wheezing,or chest rattles so far. I would keep the eye cleaned with saline, and if needed you could use Terramycin Eye ointment or Vetericyn eye gel from farm stores. If any of the above symptoms start or she acts lethargic or ill, then I would give her Tylan 50 injectable (a cattle drug) 1 ml once or twice a day orally for 5 days. You could also give it by injection into the breast muscle for 3 days. Here is a link about MG:

Thank you! I feel so bad for her because she's having to look at everything with just the good eye. I think I'll try the eye ointment, and if it doesn't improve then go to the Tylan. I hate when one of my girls is hurt!:-(

I have been having the same problem and have decided to go ahead and use the Tylan on the infected and quarantined bird. I have a small flock of only four hens. Should I treat everyone? Also, the sick hen isn't laying yet but should be soon. How long should I not use the eggs?

Only treat the sick hen. Egg withdrawal for Tylan is 1 day for oral use, and 7 days for injectable use.

What about quarantine? Now that we are through with the Tylan, how long do I continue to keep her segregated?
Thanks! Best and most clear advice I found on any of the threads!

Hey! I just went through this with a few of mine.

I took one to the vet since I wasn't sure what it was she had and didn't want anyone else to get infected from her. He gave me amoxicillin pills and oflaxacin eye drops. I gave both twice a day.

I had a second chicken get the same eye thing, so I treated her with Terramycin twice a day and got the same results as the pills/eye drops/expensive vet visit.

However, the Terramycin treated chicken is having eye problems again (2 weeks later).

That's my story! Haha

Oh ps: many of the chickens in my area got fowl pox due to a sudden increase in humidity here and some storms. We live in Southern California, so that weather was unusual.

I noticed some of mine had minor pox symptoms but since they're so young and don't have fully developed combs, they were getting "pox" on their faces. it's a possibility it could be related to that.
