Very sadly, one of my girls died last night and I worry that my inexperience didn't help her. Sheach was an ex battery hen and never grew her feathers back but was happy and lived well for 6 months. Two days ago she went off her food, hunched up and looked so tired. We gently checked to see if she was egg bound but found nothing although her abdomen seemed fluidy. She died in our arms in front of a warm fire but I feel I've let her down. What could it have been? My other chickens are fine. Thanks for any help.

could have been sour crop or just the stress of being a battery hen and the physical onslaught of being a battery hen could have caught up to her... seemed like you did everything you could. I'm sorry for your loss, don't beat yourself up about it you did a great thing taking her in

I'm not versed enough in the medical side of things to offer anything but sympathy. I am glad you took her in and gave her a good home! Best wishes and thank you for joining BYC!!

I'm sorry you lost your girl. It sounds like you did what you could for her and I'm sure she was happier with you than in a commercial situation.

Thank you all for your comment. It looks like it was probably egg yolk peritonitis. Poor girl, but she was so loved

NFC I have a relationship somewhat different with my pillow. I have only ONE pillow, if I get out of bed and leave, it has anxiety attacks. You know pillows prefer to be in groups.
That's why I have to take frequent naps through the day. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!!
