My sister and I have decided to keep one of our BO cockerals. Now to decide which one. One has already established himself as the ruler of the roost. They are young 6 week olds. Neither seems more ornery than the other. Should I keep the head honcho since he already thinks he is in charge?

About a year ago we replaced our top roo oliver who was top of the roost but aggressive. We replaced him with a skittish phoenix roo who does bother coming near us but takes care of the girls.

That's my problem. Neither is skittish, or has any bad personality traits yet. I just wondered if it would be better to keep the one that already decided he is the top dog.

Yes probably see if you can try to see any actions to might indicate aggressiveness... Also if your planning on breeding look at charecteristics you like better...

Keep the one who's top dog definitely other wise the rooster might find it hard to be separated and the other might find it hard to fit in . Could you put up some pics ? Its also best to go for the best looking rooster for future generations .
Good luck and remember to keep us updated.

6 weeks old is way too young to make that decision based on behavior.
They won't show their true colors until they are about a year old........or at least until they start crowing and showing true dominance behaviors.

What is the purpose in keeping the one you choose? If it's for breeding/chick production, you'll want to pick the one that is best overall - including behavior but also from an evaluation of his physical characteristics, etc.
