Advice/opinion please? WARNING MAY UPSET SOME

I am so sorry! When I loose a hen that i'm real close too, I bury them under an apple tree so that their life isn't wasted. Her body will be used to feed the apple tree to produce beautiful fruit in the fall. It's just the beautiful romance of nature that the earth can take back what it created. Hope this helps?

I know it is horrible to loose birds. We have battle many predators over the years. We freeze any lost livestock and donate to either a wildlife rehab center or a zoo. At least we will know it is going to a good cause.

My sincerest condolances.

I think it would be ok to eat if her if you feel you can.

I otherwise suggest composting her. I know that doesn't sound very glamorous, but she will nurture the land and become the flowers. Just be certain to bury her deep enough, or burn her to ashes and mix it in first.

Thank you every one, my girls are back to their coop finally. I lost one but I not want to go through that again.
I went outside and one was sitting on the post, she seemed to know somehow, she is the one that will NOT let me go near her. I walked over to her and I grabbed her and walked in 3 feet of snow to
the coop and they are all there now. Nice and secure, no one can get in now!

Thanks for yur encouragement witht he girl I lost.

Happy New Year

Sorry aboout your loss. I caught a hawk in the act, but it couldn't carry off my hen, and we had an unknown predator kill and pile up several youngsters. The hen (I wasn't attached to her) was disposed of in a bag and into the trash. The youngsters are still in my deep freeze. I plan to give them to a local trapper who catches foxes for use in fox hunting (with horses). At least their bodied will be used for the greater good. I've heard that you can process and keep (and eat) the meat of a recently (predator) killed bird, but I just couldn't do it. Good Luck with your decision.

Oh that is awful, to lose so many at once. You know it is hard if they kill and leave them, why didn't it eat them that is wrong.

She was a pet for several years I just couldn't eat her. I mean she followed me around I picked her up and pet her.

She is the one that the hawk grabbed and tried to fly away with, my pug jumped the hawk and saved her life. she was so afraid she would not go in the coop at night., She sat in the cold and rain. I knew she would be the one.

Thanks again and luck to yours in the future

OMG this is the first time in 30 years I have heard someone admit they wanted to freeze their pet and bury it later

. When my step dad told my mom he was going to put Taco our cat in the freezer and wait till the weekend to bury it she said "hell no"

. I could not have agreed more. I think that if their are others in the household you should consider them before putting a dead animal intended for burial in the same place that their meals are stored. Just the thought of it

If your going to keep some feathers give thought to keeping the entire bird. Contact a taxidermist and see what it might cost. There are some really creative mountings that can be done, really only limited to your imagination. It could make a very beautiful memory that remains with you. Folks have game birds mounted all the time. Nothing wrong with keeping her remains frozen until your have decided how you will remember her. If you decide to bury her just wrap her in a piece of muslin and put her in a zip-lock, disinfect the outside of the bag and put her in the freezer until you can decide when the time is right. Its how I keep remains for critters that I have mounted, fish, bobcat, Grouse etc. "Right next to the hamburger that's getting cooked for supper". Nature will take its course.

Glad your girl let you pick her up, funny sometimes they just know, usually when they get stressed. We watched the news and you guys sure got wacked. Sorry for the loss.

We lost a Chicken this summer but just didn't have anything we could hang on to. If I did I'd put it up in the shop with the others, or not. Do what your heart tells you to do.

We have fed them to our dogs or left them in the woods so that something will be able to feed on them. Burying became futile because my dog smells it and digs it up.

But i like not wasting the meat. Something always eats them.
