So - About a month ago someone my husband knows **gave** me 7 chickens. One had some respiratory thing and I culled it right away. Three are laying regularly. The other three I think may be too old to lay. Two have combs that are pale and smaller and I never see them anywhere near the nest boxes. One is solid black with no comb at all and has never been near the nestboxes. I tried to feel their hips (I saw this on a paper from some university) to see if they are laying but don't know what I am doing... I work during the day so it's hard to be sure - but I'm almost positive they are too old to lay.
As an aside - I will always raise my own chicks after this. You just don't know what you are getting if you don't.
