So - About a month ago someone my husband knows **gave** me 7 chickens. One had some respiratory thing and I culled it right away. Three are laying regularly. The other three I think may be too old to lay. Two have combs that are pale and smaller and I never see them anywhere near the nest boxes. One is solid black with no comb at all and has never been near the nestboxes. I tried to feel their hips (I saw this on a paper from some university) to see if they are laying but don't know what I am doing... I work during the day so it's hard to be sure - but I'm almost positive they are too old to lay.

As an aside - I will always raise my own chicks after this. You just don't know what you are getting if you don't.

Are you sure they are older? It kind of sounds like they are too young to lay yet if they have small, pale combs. If you can post pics, I'm sure people will be able to help you better. (I'm certainly no expert!)

Thanks - I am out of town - but will be back later this week. I'll get pics and post them. Hadn't thought about them being too young.

Hmmm.... typically if the chicken hasn't developed a comb, it is still too young to lay. Post pics if you can so we can take a look.
