AE's "HOARDERS" CHICKENS on tonight's epsiode!

Has anyone ever watched an episode of Animal Cops on Animal Planet? If there is any question at all about the legalities, and what AC officers have to go through to legally sieze an animal, watch an episode or two......another show that I cannot watch anymore. I end up in tears and feeling like my heart has been ripped right out of my chest when I see what some people are capable of. I could never be an animal control officer-I would be forcibly yanking animals away from people, and slapping the crap out of those same people for what they have done. I simply could not stand by and wait for a judge or a police officer to tell me it was ok to seize an animal that was in danger.

It is indeed very hard for AC to forcibly remove animals from people. I had a problem with my next door neighbor who kept a starving dog tied up in his backyard for over a year. He also had another dog that wasn't tied up that was starving, and he had a roommate with a dog that was vicious and ended up biting a girl on our street. They had to do a lot to finally take the dogs away. As the neighbor, it was hard on me. I tried to throw food over the fence a lot, and used my hose to fill up it's water dish in the summer. It was terrible! Esp since I have 2 kids and a really well cared for dog. I didn't like animals like that living right next to me. They eventually got picked up, but it took forever. By the time they were removed they were completely emaciated and had to be put down for health reasons that could not be fixed. It took a lot of calls on my part, not just to animal control but to the police when they would bark and howl all night and wake my kids up. The guy was hugely fat, there were always beer cans all over his property, and he claimed he couldn't afford dog food. The very least he could have done is feed them.

Me as well. That's why I can't even watch it-I feel helpless and furious. I detest feeling helpless when it comes to animals, kids and older folks.

I just watched this episode on my DVR - WOW! I worked in mental health for 13 years, usually on the teams that worked with the most difficulty individuals in the county. I've been in the homes of hoarders many times, but never in one that bad. The worst in my own experiences has been a few guys who love to dumpster dive. I had to help clear out the places after we finaly managed to get them in the hospital for a short stay - I had spiders fall on my head and roaches crawl across my feet at one place. So I can only imagine what the smell in there must have been like. Thank god I never had to work with an animal hoarder. We once had a woman just briefly who we believed was hoarding cats, but she wouldn't let us in her home. They would peek at us through the windows, and one was on her porch - with it's eye ball out of it's socket. Now THAT was a frustrating situation. She eventually "fired" us, and I never knew what happened to her. Like Matt said, these are very very difficult situations to deal with, and very few people want to (or can) help them. I comend them for trying to help, and I'm glad Matt took the time to respond and explain a few things. I'll sleep better knowing she will not be allowed to have chickens ever again. I was sick watching it. I taught a graduate class on mental illnesses and used one of the hoarders episodes to illustrate several different disorders. That episode was by far the most disturbing, but very real.

When it comes to that level of anger, always remember that the anger is in proportion to the pain they are in. It never excuses the mistreatment of others, but it helps to understand it.

Edited because my cat hit the keys...
anyway, what I said was that Matt is correct in saying - if you use the wrong approach, they just go out and do it all over again because nothing is preventing them from doing it
How sad for everyone

Hullo!!! I could not agree more. I think she should have been tossed into prison for child abuse long ago. Therapy don't fix evil. The way she slapped the goats on camera? You know the kids went through way worse. It makes me sick at heart to think of that family.

This was disturbing. I just finished watching the episode, which I had recorded. I totally appreciate having the postings from the producer "rebroadcast" for us.

There are terrible repercussions from abuse. I know; been there, had it happen to me. My childhood memories of good moments are few and far between. And I have a tendency to hoard, which is fun to laugh about, and dismiss as something the hoarder could simply just handle. It is difficult, and I am thankful I am not adverse to divesting myself of trash. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the effort it takes to put things away after a period of time during which I haven't done so. Then I go nuts working on it. Until the next time I find the energy and attack it again.

That woman, Hanna, was exactly what sonew said she was, but she was so horribly ill, on top of her classlessness. Gary the bunnies guy, whoooo boy, whatever created HIS neurosis allowing him to remain a spoiled little whiner must have been a doozy.

I look forward to watching the episode on January 16. Nifty, and Sacramento. Hmmmmmmmm. < peeking over my shoulder >
