AE's "HOARDERS" CHICKENS on tonight's epsiode!

I missed it! RATS! My ex in-laws were hoarders. My ex husband has the hoarder genetics, I think, but he does try to resist. He's my son's father, so we do keep in touch, even though I'm re-married. I find the hoarder shows just fascinating. I think it's because I've seen hoarders first-hand. My ex FIL, who is now deceased, had so much junk, there was basically a path to get through the house. He kept newspapers, plastic food containers (like cool whip containers), just alot of junk. He had a four bedroom house, and two of the bedrooms were so full of stuff, you couldn't even get in them. Then, he turned the attached garage into another room, filled that to capacity, then he built a storage barn that was as big as another garage in his back yard, and filled that to the brim. I remember, once I threw a dirty rag away after washing the car, and he took it out of the trash and said that the rag was "still good". If his wife tried to throw anything out, he would get really upset. He just yelled and screamed.

I think that molded me into who I am today, seeing that. I keep things organized, and I do clutter patrol quite often. My house is pretty neat and organized. Sometimes it gets a little bit dusty, but there is no clutter.

I have 25 chickens. Just yesterday, I called my hatchery and cancelled my order of 8 chicks. I feel I'm loaded to capacity, and I sure don't want my chickens to suffer from over crowding, like that woman on television.

Oh, I agree. AC should have taken control & the lady needs to be put in a home & monitored. Her displays of violent behavior toward people on the show clearly show that. I think the Gary character probably needed the same...

I don't know....it looked like an older lady....just from the glimpse I saw....and it looked like the poultry were in her house?

Of course, DH says--"Oh it's YOU after I'm dead!"

This is the same thing my family says to me!

My question is this: Why do these people volunteer to be on the show? I mean, many don't even think they have a problem, so what do they expect to happen?

I'm guessing that it usually is pushed on them when they are about to get into trouble with child protective services, adult protective services, city, landlords, etc. and are forced to "get help". I'm guessing the show says they will offer help in exchange for filming them.

I'm thinking that there are two or three answers there and either/both could apply depending on the person/family

1) So many of these folks are physically and/or mentally incapable of getting out of the deep hole they've gotten into. They also are often financially incapable. The sheer cost of disposing of all that stuff is impossible for most people. Getting junk hauled away is very costly & landfill costs can be super high, too, for some of these folks who are clearly not well off. Plus, many are physically incapable of doing the work themselves and can't afford to hire anyone. They get the ?opportunity? (perhaps chance is a better word) to get this done at no cost and feel they have no other choice.

2) Family and friends push them really hard to do it. Combined with #1 in most cases, I'm sure...

3) 15 minutes (or an hour?) of fame.... shudder, not the kind of fame I'd like BUT remember how little kids are with attention. Negative attention is often better than no attention at all. Perhaps some of these people are motivated the same way.

I love watching the hoarders shows. It helps keep me in line! Everyone in my family tends to "overdo" it. Chickens? I got a few and liked them, so ended up with 150 of them before I knew it. The problem hoarders have is being unable to let anything go. It is so sad both for them and their family....and in the case of live animals being hoarded, the animals.

Watching the regular hoarders (non-animal) helps me to keep my house clean. Because every time that show is over I am rip roaring around the place throwing everything out in sight. I am temporarily on hold with house purging as my giant trash can is completely full and trash day isn't until tomorrow. Tomorrow night I will be ALL OVER IT. Goodwill has gotten over 5 large black trashbags full of clothes from me this year. A couch went out the other day. I've sold over 100 chickens.

It does seem ridiculous watching those shows and the people won't throw TRASH away. Definitely a mental illness. If that had been my barn and those people wanted to help move stuff/trash/etc, I would have been THRILLED.

But I'm not a hoarder.

Nifty and Rozzie, very good theories! And a very high percentage of them would take on the offer of free help when it would take them YEARS to clean it up if they want to go piece by piece. Wouldn't make the LL look bad because their house was a dump hole and they didn't do a very effective job in checking or monitoring their tenants? I know evasion of privacy would be lost but a few minutes looky see would make matters good or bad and not letting it get out of hand.

I agree with you Nella Bean, everytime I watch that show, the cleaning girl in me comes out and say CLEAN! I hate cleaning but this motivates me as much LOL!
