We let our first babies out once they were about one or two months old or so. We waited until they were completely feathered. What we did was flip a laundry basket over in the lawn, and put them under it. That way they were contained, yet still able to scratch and peck and just be chickens.
We didn't let them out unrestricted until we had their outdoor coop built, and had kept them in there for two days to establish that that was where they should go home to at night.
