I got five RIR chicks recently but I am very unsure of their ages. I am also fairly sure that three of them are pullets and one of them is a roo, however, the last chick is confusing me a bit. S/he has a personality somewhere in the middle ground between the others and has a slightly more developed comb.

I am fairly sure he is a he.

I am fairly sure she is a she.

I am not however, so sure about this one.

And if anyone could give me a ball park on their age that would be great.

This site has been amazing for figuring things out on my own so far.

They don't look like RIR to me, but I have no idea what they are. My RIR chicks (hatchery stock) are at 8 weeks and I never saw that whitish feathering.

They look like my 8 1/2 week old RIR that I got from the feed store. As to gender I am still trying to figure that one out too.

As far as tail feathers go, the one I am mostly sure is a roo has not really got any at the moment. The one I am unsure of does, but was the last so far to grow them in. I can try and find a pic, but I am not sure if I have one.

My RIR's have white in their faces, too. I'll try and post a photo of them, but I can't figure out how to upload it. Also, my guess is they are about 5 weeks.

Here are mine at 2.5-3 weeks.

I rehomed (gave to co worker) my suspect roos on Comb color (Darker) and tail feathers, much shorter.

I'm no expert but just by ovservations the suspect roos were really agressive to each other and absolutely freaked when I picked them up, the others really enjoy it, and still do.

Good luck!

I agree - they look about 5 weeks old.

In your photo that shows all 5 chicks together, the very front one looks like a roo to me - not sure if you have a second roo or not.

This is a photo of my one and only production red at 7-8 weeks for comb & wattles comparision.

Hope these help... not sure of gender on mine either yet.
Some of mine did have the white fluff.
