My reasons for chickens is for pets with benefits (eggs!) but their health , happiness and well being is more important to us than the speed of getting their first egg (although it would be hard to wait...). I read that it is more likely for a pullet to suffer a prolapsed vent if she starts to lay at a young age. With this in mind I was wondering if it is best to get new chicks later in the summer so they don't lay their first egg as soon--basically go into winter not having layed an egg yet (preferably doing so early spring a year later), or is it better to get them earlier, like April, so they do lay early fall? To make matters more confusing, I read that chicks born later in summer are not as hardy as chicks hatched in spring.
What is your experience?? Should I worry about it at all?
