Think "Red Light, Green Light" when doing behavior modification. So, spray bottle for the bad behavior (Red Light). Treats as soon as the bad behavior STOPS (Green Light). That's positive reinforcement for the behavior you want. Animals live very much in the present, so, just as you have to "catch 'em in the act" when they do something wrong, you also have to "catch 'em doing it RIGHT."
