Aggressive Rooster

I have a aggressive roo and I actually like him because he's nice to looking bird with attitude. I have to put him in check once in while because he only has a pea sized brain, with him I am the aggressor sometime and if I get alone in the coop I grab him like a hawk would. I do find it funny when he can keep my wife and teenager at bay (really), but I would never let my grand niece outside without restraining him by either locked him in the coop or on a leash. He keeps his flock safe, I saw a hawk munching away on a morning dove on my lawn but I haven't lost a chook yet, so go figure the wild bird wasn't aware enough to stay alive.

I totally agree. I have two roos, Napoleon is the dominant one. I am intimidated by him but only because he is gorgeous and very protective of his flock. I am trying to learn what "coming after" means. Napoleon is 5 mod old and very large, weighs about 15 lbs easy. He is a mix Dominique/Plymouth Partridge and something to be seen. I'm new to chicken raising and I can't figure out if he's really being aggressive towards me or feeling out our space together. He did seem to come a little close with an evil eye so I chased him showing my dominance.

Is that right or have I started a war?

I see I am not alone. My rooster purchased with this flock was fine until last week. Suddenly he at almost 1 year of age has started trying to flog me and others when the chickens see me or others and come running for treats. He eats as I throw out treats. He just seems to decide to attack because the hens get close to me. I am going to give it a week or so then if this continues, I will cull him. He is a silver laced Wyandotte and beautiful. I believe he is just trying to maintain control of the hens and protect them. However I know he gets it that I mean food.

Dont give it a week, he will get worse. Act now and set him straight. A squirt from the hose will cool his temper lol.

So, my husband had the problem with the rooster and used a broom to she whim around plenty. He didn't harm him, just made sure he became submissive. So far a few days and he is acting like he used to. I am sure he will need a refresher. Watching him closely....

I know this seems silly but I am new to this and have noticed my lead Roo (Napoleon) acting more dominant. In the mornings, I open the coop to the yard and he is the first out. He looks serious when he comes out and I carry a board just in case. I have noticed that on cool mornings is when he seems to be the most dominant. As soon as a hen comes out (which takes a lot of time on these types of mornings) he immediately mates. He has not been aggressive toward me however, I am watching him.

When I call my chickens he is always the first one leading the flock. I usually keep the dense between me and them jut because they are free range and they come to the back fence when I call.

Is this behavior normal or is this the beginning stages of an aggressive Roo?

You will know when he intends to get aggressive toward you. He will turn and drop his wing in your direction. He will also walk very stiffly and in some cases puff up his neck feathers. His mating is a message to you that he owns the girls, not you. You can set him straight by shooing him off of them when he mounts them when you are present. Normally I dont care if a rooster mounts in front of me, it does however show that he is being dominant and I watch him closely. I will always watch them closely for signs of naughtiness lol.

Okay well it finally happened. As i was opening the coop door to the chicken yard, out he came and right straight toward me.

I was a sight to be seen as my adrenaline was pumping and I am chasing yelling at him. I kicked him but probably not hard enough. I've followed him a couple of times around the meadow to make sure he knows I'm on his tail.

I need to make sure he knows I am boss because I don't want to lose him to the stew pot. He's my favorite and VERY protective of his girls. Without him, they are in big trouble.

How large is the rooster? I used to have a problem with my rooster yanking on my shoes, and biting at my ankles.He didn't really try to spur me. I stopped this by wearing water proof boots that go mostly up my calf and coated them with lemon juice. He would bite and shake his head, then he eventually stopped and learned to leave me alone. I might have gotten lucky, but its worth a shot before culling him.
