So... having lost one a night for the first three nights, I put a light in there as suggested, and lo and behold they've been fine for the last two nights!!
I guess darkness was the issue.
That makes me so sad that I didn't find out sooner.
Seems crazy. I would assume that the light being on all night would mess with their biological clocks?
I've put a lamp in there so it's at least lower light at night rather than having the ceiling light on all night.
I guess I can start turning the light off again when they're a bit older and sturdier?
