Ailing chick question.
I have a silkie chick who can no longer stand and is falling over. She's struggling to stay upright. She seemed to be doing alright yesterday but I found her this morning, basically flat on the ground, eyes closed, no chirping and cold (just a couple inches too far from her heater). I thought she was dead.
I got her warmed up and started giving her small doses of vitamin water. She revived, started peeping and isn't limp anymore! Unfortunately she is now having trouble with mobility and just falls over.
I am wondering if a nutrient deficiency can cause this? The feed I was giving her didn't have added vitamins or minerals. I mix my own feed. This time I made a batch of feed for my layers (18%) but neglected to add the Fertrell poultry mineral mix (first time ever).
I just grabbed some of the layer mix and had been putting it in the food processor to break it down a bit for her.
My question is has anyone have a chick come back from this? How did you treat them?
Also, she seems too small for 4-weeks old.
🙁

Thanks much!
😢

layer mix has a lot of calcium that could be an issue. normally we don't start giving layer feed or adding a calcium supplement until they start laying. I think it's hard on their...liver....kidneys? idk one of those.

I would switch to a chick starter.

and yes that chick is VERY small for four weeks.

I don't raise silkies or any other ornamental breed but that looks less than a week old. maybe a failure to thrive situation

It’s likely that your feed is insufficient. Chicks need a different diet to laying hens. I would switch to chick crumb asap. I would also add save a chick or a poultry tonic. She is far too small but it’s possible this is due to incorrect feed. Her protein should be around 20%
