We lost a buckeye cockerel tonight Husband and 15yo must've scared it off when they pulled up because the carcass was still moist. Tore a hole through the chest and ate most of the right wing.

We lost a buckeye cockerel tonight Husband and 15yo must've scared it off when they pulled up because the carcass was still moist. Tore a hole through the chest and ate most of the right wing.

Any idea what did it? I just had my first predator attack tonight. The pullet was able to escape with only minor injuries but most likely culprit was hawk.

Not sure what it was. The most likely suspect is a raccoon, but we have a lot of predators here. Could also be skunk, opossum, or bobcat (they're not common but they are in the area). We set a trap with marshmallows so we'll see what's there in the morning.

When I went out to the farm this morning and not a single chicken was outside. Poor babies were so traumatized by last night's attack. As soon as I called "chook chook chook" they came right out.

Did you ever trap anything? Other than a chicken, that is.

No, the trap's been empty. The day after the attack I did see something in the road just past where we turn off for the coop. It was just far enough away I couldn't identify what it was, but the right size for raccoon or fox. I didn't have time to check it out at the time, and it was gone when i went back later that day. So maybe whatever it was was scared enough by the interruption that it hasn't been back. Or maybe it got hit by a car.
