Akitas ?

Our street is only about 10 houses. Maybe less than that. Anyway a new house was built recently and the folks have moved in within the last couple of weeks. Evidently they have 2 Akitas that they do not keep fenced in. The Akita attacked the next-door neighbor's goat, badly injured it and the dog owners did not even contact the neighbor to see if the goat was okay or offer to pay for his medical services. (Neighborhood gossip is that the dog owners saw the dogs and pulled them off the goat.) I live about 4 houses up the road from them, I'm scared to death those things will come kill my chickens as they free range (even though it is within a fenced area) or kill one of my alpacas.

Does anyone have experience with those sort of dogs? I'm thinking of having DH run more electric along in between the board of the fence. (Its a 4 board horse fence, that was there when we bought the place, so something could stick its head in or climb in.) We already have electric on the bottom to prevent stuff crawling in.

Sorry I cannot help with the breed,but sure does sound like you better put another line or 2 of wire to be on the safe side, obviously these dogs have proven they will attack and I dont think they will discriminate........ have a pellet gun handy too !

There are two akitas in our neighborhood, owned by two different households. When the dogs are taken for walks, both owners tell you to keep away from their dogs (i.e. don't try to pet them friendly-like). The dogs are always leashed, but I wonder how fun and nice could they be if they can't be trusted to not attack people.

I did once know an akita mix and he was the most adorable and sweet dog you'd ever want to meet. He was one of the best dogs I ever knew.

Pellet gun? Ha, if they stick their little heads thru my fence it'll be a full on gun. I hate to say that, I have 3 dogs whom I love dearly but I would not let my dogs or any other attack an alpaca worth $10,000 & up. And my chickens are worth about a million apiece. At least to me.

An Akita is a Japanese dog bred for hunting deer, bears an wild boars.

Left unattended in the backyard or in a kennel, they tend to develop "personality" problems and become very destructive to the yard, which is due to boredom. They are highly pack oriented, thus, isolating them from the pack (i.e., the owner) causes them great stress.

Akitas tend to be stubborn and require a firm but loving education where "no" always means "no" and never "whatever".

Akitas have a high and well-developed prey drive, particularly to small animals, including cats.

I hope that the neighbour with the goat called animal control because there'll be more problems with the dogs.

My nephew had an Akita... and yes I would definitely put up more wire. Im sure there are good Akitas out there.. but these apparently are not...​

One of the groomers at work has an Akita and a Pomeranian. The leader of the pack is the Pom. Chewy is a really good dog. Very large Akita, but well trained.

Akitas must have good training or they are just completely uncontrollable. I done a little checking on the breed when I heard my sister complaining about how he behaved.. Can't ALWAYS blame the dog.. more often than not its the owners.

Put up a fence!!!!! Akitas are usually a bad tempered dog if they don't have ALOT of attention.
