Hi folks, it's been awhile. Things have been busy. Went to TX to see Henry my new grandson. DD and hers live in the Woodlands and while it's very nice I like AL better. DD and the kids are coming next week but I kinda wish I was coming there. Folks seemed nicer in AL than in TX. Not to mention Yahoo had AL listed as one of the least taxed places to live.

Of course all this traveling gets to you after awhile. Not to mention that no one takes care of my birds like I do. My Dels have all gone into a molt which I think is cuz I wasn't here and something upset them.


Claudia I miss you. Silkies are doing good and the RIR too. I've got some nice Black orp roos to breed that splash too. I expect to keep the blacks from hinkjc farm and breed them to the lavender hens and scrap the lav roo. The blacks are nicer. I will say I regret not taking you up on your offer for more silkies. Perhaps in the spring? DW likes them. I can't believe it. She's actually taking an interest in chickens and even closes them up at night for me. She even gave the Silkies names. I can't believe it.

snakes really only bother very young chickens and I usually find a snake in a laying nest every summer.
Use a metal can for your feed, and you shouldn't have any problems.
If the hens are locked up in a wooden coop at night, they should be fine. However, coons and foxes are around during the day sometimes too. Most of the time, dogs are the main threat. I usually put wiring on my tractor floor both for predator protection and so that they don't tear up the ground so bad. I use larger 3x2'' fencing, so that it doesn't get too much in the way of their scratching. Mine also free range. I use my tractors as a temporary holding pen between chick/pullet stage and then into the main coop for big girl age. Put out a trough of sand/dirt in there for bathing in the tractor, if you want.​

Thank you for the information. I'm going to get some of the larger wire for the bottom of the tractor. I'm not really in a position where I'm located to have a full size coop but then, I only plan to keep 3 or 4 hens at a time anyway. How do the snakes get into the nest box? Is there a way I can keep them out? I'm not sure I can do snakes.

There really isn't much of a practical way to keep snakes out. They can squeeze into spaces that you wouldn't believe. Just know, unless you live close to water, that the majority of them will be harmless rat snakes or black racers. You can avoid having them frequent the area by taking out eggs throughout the day, or as much as you can, so the snake won't know that he can always find a meal there. You can do snakes. You're an AL girl.
One of our coops is next to a pond, so, after I open the door, I poke a stick around in there in case there's a cotton mouth. It's kind of dark, so I don't like to go sticking my hand in there.

I have decided to only keep my buff laced brahma's, and coronation sussex. I'm selling, 15 week old light/coronaion splits, i have six pullets and three cockerals. I have some Lavender Orpingtons from different breeders, ages from 1 day to 16 weeks. I have four black orpingtons, 17 weeks old, two pullets and two cockerals from bargain. These are going to be huge with great type. I have around two dozen orpington eggs from lavender over lavender and a lavender rooster over a blue splash hen to give to the one who buys the black orpingtons or a trio of the sussex. I also have some nice buff orpington pullets and cockerals from show quality stock, 11 weeks old. If interested i can send pictures, the breeder they came from and prices. Thanks,Billy.
