ALABAMA!!

I just got chickens last month. I have one RIR, one Blue Jersey Giant, one Barred Plymouth Rock, one Mutt Easter Egger/x/Polish (my profile pic), and one momma phoenix game hen and her five yet to figure out breed gender chicks, i think they are all mutts. Got my very first eggs tonight, so I'm pretty happy.

Hey y'all. Just wondering if anyone knows someone in the area that raises doves or pigeons. We have taken in a rescue pigeon/white dove and it is way more of a mess than I want in the house and I have no place to keep it outside. She/he is so beautiful. And she makes the sweetest sound first thing in the morning. If it wasn't for the mess, I'd love to keep her. But the mess is making me crazy and I know she would rather be in a bigger space to fly instead of the small cage I have. Anyone know someone that might want it? Please, oh, please say yes!

My very first eggs! I think the brown is from my Barred Rock, the cream from my BBR Phoenix game. I found those two eggs last night. This morning the green egg was there and my Mutt (profile pic) had just laid it. (the white egg is a grocery store large egg). Now I'm waiting on my RIR and Blue Jersey Giant to start laying. I think the RIR will start soon, but the Jersey is still pretty young.

hi friend just still building my coop and run hope to get my chickens this spring do you maybe know where the best places to get some or maybe you have some for sale? I'm looking for large brown egg layers thank you
My advice on the coop and run is to make it way more secure than you think it needs to be. Remember you are keeping dogs, coons, possums, etc., OUT, not chickens in. Build it as if you wanted to hold a large bulldog (that really, really wants out.) Then it will be secure enough. Don't forget that many pr editors dig.

As far as buying chicks, I recommend Riverside Feed and Seed. They will be getting chicks in probably starting in late Feb or in March. Don't buy anything 'straight run.' Trust me on this. Buy 'pullets' only and you may just get one or two roosters instead of mostly roosters! If you get lucky and get all hens, I will give you a Beautiful rooster (right now I have 6 that you could have your choice of!)

Checking in from Somerville AL New to the site and lookin for like minded chicken lovers! I'm fairly new with a small flock of 6 RIR, 5 Americana, and 12 Cornish x Rock.... Got my Cornish x for sale so I can get more of what I want..... Interested in building up to a 44 count flock of 11 RIR, 11 Americana, 11 BR, and 11 BSL.... so lookin to buy soon! Lemme know what ya'll got! Open to all input and any advice as I am re-learning the chicken biz! Aint messed with them since I was young and Papaw passed away....
Welcome to BYC, you have found more chicken lovers than you can handle!

As far as info, the search feature on the site is invaluable. Search for anything (and I mean anything) and after you read all or most of the info you get, if you still are not sure, we will be happy to put in our two cents worth.

That green egg is lovely and really large for a first egg. Are they the hens' first eggs, or YOUR first eggs?

Speaking of roosters, I have several I need to re home or that need to be processed. Of course, I would rather they have a home with good care and hens, but if they need to be dinner, I am not opposed, I just don't want to dwell on it.

I have two Black Copper Marans (one is promised, I think) three EE roosters, two Sliver Laced Wyandotte/Silver Campine crosses that are very pretty and won't get too big, one BIG SLW/Buff Orp cross and one other that won't come to mind at the moment. All of them are good looking birds that are healthy and non-aggressive (so far.) Only one, an EE, is older than a year and I would just as soon keep him because I plan to keep which ever one(s) is not chosen. If anyone is interested, PM me. I am not interested in money but if they are going to be eaten, I think they are worth $20 for all 6. Oh, and I have three male guineas that I will give to anyone wanting them. They are healthy, too, but with no females around, they are harassing the chickens mercilessly.

I was wondering the same thing, if she had been laying before we got her since the size and awesome color. I got the chickens the middle of October and they were all suppose to be pullets. I've had her for 5 weeks and not one egg has been laid. So either the Mutt was super stressed from the move, or she just laid that huge beautiful egg as her first egg.

The RIR laid her very first egg this evening! Front left next to the white grocery store large egg. They ALL laid within 24 hours of the first egg appearing. I've had the chickens since the middle of October. Now just waiting on the Blue Jersey Giant to grow up a little more. Her face is still greyish/flesh color, not even pink. The other chickens faces turned bright bright red a couple of days ago and yeahhhh EGGS!
