These are my 5 unknown breed/gender chicks and the Momma hen that came with them...LOL. She is some game type looks most like a Phoenix so that is what I call her. She has one spur on her left leg.


 
I want to become a breeder of a few "Heritage Breeds".... Looking at RIR & PBR for those.... also I have some Americana and want bout 6 more hens! That will give me 10 Americana hens.... I have been researching and I want 4 diff breeds to raise dead set on the RIR, PBR, and Americana being 3 of them! For my 4th I wanted Black Star but found out they don't reproduce sex-link chicks so I may raise me a few out of the RIR and PBR that I will have just for laying hens.... that still leaves me at a loss for my fourth breed? I'm now researching the Buff Orps but have no prior knowledge of them what so ever. All I know is they are some beautiful birds from the pics I've seen and seem to be a pretty good dual purpose breed from what I read...... Anyone deal with the Buff Orps? Or any Orps. for that matter?

I have orps and I like them. Mine are pretty tame and like dogs with feathers. For the most part pretty quiet except 1 of mine is a screamer when she is laying an egg(the first time I heard it, I thought one of my dogs got her). They are duel purpose. However, they take longer to mature but been told most heritage breed mature slower anyways .

This is when they are 5 month old. As you can see they blend in with my dogs.

Where can I find me some of those dogs with feathers? I think my chickens would like them, too!!

My very first eggs! I think the brown is from my Barred Rock, the cream from my BBR Phoenix game. I found those two eggs last night. This morning the green egg was there and my Mutt (profile pic) had just laid it. (the white egg is a grocery store large egg). Now I'm waiting on my RIR and Blue Jersey Giant to start laying. I think the RIR will start soon, but the Jersey is still pretty young.
