I wish you lived near Tuscaloosa, I'd love it. I've always wanted an incubator but refuse to pay the price.

Yeah I know but just haven't got a good, sure fire plan for one. I know there's tons of different ways to make them.

Oh you ask a dangerous question Wisher1000! Someone asked me about them this morning at work and I could tell they wished they hadn't when their eyes glazed over! I think I lost them when I said my husband came home from work and found me in the bathroom floor washing a hen's face with a washcloth. . . .and that's why I'm here. Fewer eye rolls and glazed eyes when I want to chicken chat.

I have two light brahma standard hens named Myrtle and Esther. They hatched in October and just started laying a couple days after Christmas. It was a great present-I was so excited. Myrtle lays every day and . . . I suspect Esther does too, at least she did for a while. I have found evidence of . . . yolk on her head.

Yes, I fear she may be an egg eater. Hence the reason for the head-wash last night. I'm hoping it was old and she's just letting nature give her a break from laying. We shall see.

I have some extra chicks if anyone is interested. Some are full blooded Black Orpingtons and some are full blooded BCM from nice dark eggs. There are also some barnyard mixes. The problem is, I don't know for sure which is which! I will sell them for $4 each if you pick them up in Tuscaloosa County.

Are the Orpingtons American or English Standard?

Welcome to BYC Feather Felicity. I am originally from Alabama although I have been in Georgia for over 40 years. In high school we had to sing War Eagle if we sang the state song. I pull for Alabama and Auburn when they are playing and I will pull for Georgia if they are not playing one of them. I have family in the Birmingham area and all kinds of realtives in Southeast Alabama. You have found a great group of people with a lot of chicken knowlege.

Quote: I don't know much about Orpingtons, these are my first. I bought the parent stock in Ohio at the Nationals back in November. They were not in the show but were in the sale area. They don't look like basketballs with a head and feet (English Standard, right?) but they are HUGE, compared to most I've seen here.
