ALABAMA!!

No snot oozing, just coughing/sneezing/wheezing etc. They're all over it now, except for one hen with swollen sinuses. They had gotten wet in the rain several times and it flared up whatever it was they had. Laying never went down, until AFTER it cleared up... getting 4-6 eggs right now, while I was getting 6-8 before.

Did they get wet? It could be something as simple as a change in bedding or difference in cleaning.

I'm thinking it's Mycoplasms ... And I know where it came from... It was a stupid mistake. A while back I got 6 silkies from someone. Of course I had heard all about biosecurity but In my excitement, I said what the heck and out them directly in the main pen.

I'm fairly confident this issue came from him, because he takes his birds to shows, buys adult birds and has them shipped in from other states, not to mention all of the eggs he buys to hatch.

I never had so much as a sneeze before they came...

We were leaning toward mycoplasma gallisepticum too... BUT what I found out, is that 80 to 90% of all flocks are carriers.. folks just don't know it, because it only pops up when they're stressed or like in my case, they get wet and their immune system gets compromised.

Wisher has posted an address before to send birds for necropsy, if you want confirmation... I just couldn't choose a bird to sacrifice, so to speak.. and really, I wasn't gaining anything from finding out what it was, since I do not treat my birds with antibiotics.

I used some vetRX to help them get a little more comfortable (it's like chicken Vicks vaporub). I got mine at http://www.twincitypoultrysupplies.com good price, and I picked up some Worminator while I was at it, to combat gape worm, just in case (it gets rid of all worms, it says). After a couple of days of sun they were good as new, aside from the one chicken with swollen sinuses.. but she doesn't seem bothered by it. My birds never got really bad though... they sounded bad, but were still laying, eating, drinking and doing their chicken-ey things. Culling would have been an option had they appeared to be suffering, luckily, I did not have to make that call.
