I'm so glad to be back. Yesterday we had to fix the door to the old coop so the ducklings can't get out and after we got that finished we moved the chickens into the empty coop. Henny looks really pitiful with all her missing feathers.

The drake took a lot of feathers off the girls.

There is one thing bugging me though. When I left my girls wouldn't let you anywhere near them. Now if I put my hand through the fence Jazzy starts preening me while I pet her and the other girls will let me touch them. Where did my skittish chickens go?

I can't complain, I like them better this way.

They might be happy you're back.

Heaven help me, I am about to do some chicken algebra.

We've got 9 hens, 8 juvies... juvies that we thought were mostly boys, although I am really starting to think we may have more pullets than expected. Going to get those two babies from Orps....... AND I just found out a friend toward Brierfield has gold laced and silver laced wyandottes and cuckoo copper marans and I want some!

Checking off the wishlist: broody chicken, check. Blue eggs, check. Dark brown eggs, check.

Someone want to buy some year old hens?

(my husband actually wants to keep anything that lays. I better make sure I clean the coop often enough....

I expect some casualties during the summer though... I don't think all my hens are going to make it to the winter. Someone is laying thin shelled eggs and they get Layena, greens and oyster shell... not much more to do about that. I really think it's one of the white rocks... as much as they lay, they start consuming the calcium stored in their body. Tick tock.. a shame, I really like them... but that's what happens with hatchery production birds: bred for quantity, not longevity.

And with all my complaining... they proved me wrong yesterday. 9 eggs.. 8 good ones, 1 smushed (probably the thin shelled egg again), so everyone is laying.

What do y'all think about this SLW? I think it's a rooster but I'm not sure. His tail feathers don't stick up like the others and has a lot more white on him. And he's a lot bigger than the others his age.

I can't tell from the picture but he/she is really pretty.
