ALABAMA!!

HI to all! We are new to this. We are about to purchase our first chickens. Are there any that are no-nos to the Alabama area. Our primary purchase is for laying eggs and family enjoyment/pets. We are thinking of purchasing 3 chickens and would like to get the best for our needs.

Thanks!!
Hi! I'm in Chelsea also. I have some black copper marans and one red comet. I got the comets from Tractor Supply, and the comets are great layers.

Did you really have to give me another breed to long for? I like the black and copper one especially!

I know the feeling. The more I read, the more I want.

Off the top of my head I want: a Lakenvelder (white with black head) or a light sussex, a Vorwerk (gold Lakenvelder, orange with black head), a Marans, a Welsummer, a double laced Barnevelder (that black and copper one

), several wyandottes (blue laced and some other colors), a Leghorn and an Araucana or two (or generic easter egger).

It would be a gorgeous colorful flock.. AND the eggs would be gorgeous.

LOVE the Barnevelders!!!! I have been looking at and researching them for a couple of weeks. Those are definately on my short list. I have been working on a colorful egg basket from the beginning and have recently started shipping eggs to friends for my own educational purposes (I've learned ALOT!) If you are interested, take a look at my other thread, "The Great Egg Shipping Experiment," I am trying to document and share my lessons learned!

I am also planning a BYC area at the Moulton Chicken and Egg Festival.............Who all is going?

Great, Jdy! I can't wait to meet you. I am not going to buy anything, no, this is just to gain some experience and knowledge on quality birds and showing. I don't need any new birds at the moment. I need to wait and hatch some OE from my own eggs to check the fertility and see if the cross produces good color on the eggs. That means that I won't even know until they reach POL toward the end of summer. I should wait till then to see what I might have room for.....

......but I'm taking a cage.

Thank you all for the input. I was thinking of getting 3 chickens each a different type. Possibly that lay different colors as someone suggested. Thanks a million

This is the easiest way to monitor egg output or know who is having a problem. Before moving to AL, I had 5 hens, a buff orpington, brown leghorn, easter egger, barred rock, and silkie. They laid (in same order) light brown, white, green, brown, and off white (smaller too).
It was so much easier to know who started laying or stopped or had a soft shell etc.

Okay, help me out here. We want hens that lay eggs regularly and are friendly I am on the IDeal site trying to decide.

We were thinking of getting a Silkie but on Ideal they are under Bantam. Are Silkie's at type of Bantama?

Also, under each type of chicken there are types. Example, if I want to get a Leghorn, which one...there are so many different kinds? Someone mentioned Mediterrian however that is not one of the options.

Plymouth Rock - again, many options, which is the one to get?

I really wanted Ameraucana or an Easter Egger however I do not see them on the Ideal site. Are they under a category that I am not familiar with?

Thanks to all!

Silkies are bantams.
Leghorns just pick a color you like, they lay same, body structure same. Like getting a black poodle or a white poodle.
Mediterrian is a class of chickens or group, like working dogs, hound group, terrier group.
Same as above for plymouth rocks.

Didnt see any easter eggers on their website, I just looked.
