Hello Alabama folks! Sweet Home Alabama...yes it is.

Is there anyone on here from around north central Alabama? I live in Toney, just north of Huntsville and just south of Ardmore, TN. We have a little house on 2.5 acres we purchased about a year ago and are trying to become a bit more self sustaining and get "off the grid" just a bit. I don't have chickens yet but I really want to get some this year. From everything I've read, I'm confident that I don't have the time to take off work to raise newly hatched chicks

so I'm looking to get some chicks that are already old enough to go into a coop as soon as I get them. I also want to make sure I get a breed that is rarely broody since I don't plan to get a rooster just yet and I don't want to jail my chickens all the time to keep them from trying to hatch unfertilzed eggs.

Can anyone give me some advice and/or suggestions of a breed or breeds to consider and where I might find some "adolescent" chickens that are coop ready?

You will have better luck finding juvinile chicks in a month or two, after some of these unsold chicks mature. Check flea markets near you and craigslist.

Thanks! Very happy to be here. I've heard there is a flea market on steroids (can't remember the name) up near Ardmore but haven't made it up there yet. I'm a bit leary of Craigslist...but I may try that as well. In the meantime, I've got to get busy building my coop and run. I've been lurking here for months, looking at the medium sized coop pictures and trying to get ideas.

Welcome, Red! Don't over think it too much, it is really fun and easy! I work full time + and not only do I brood chicks, but I hatch as well! Get a good sturdy, secure coop built FIRST (my best advice) then worry about the chickens, you will probably end up with which ever opportunity presents itself and it will be fine no matter what kind they are. We're glad you joined us on the Alabama!! thread and have fun surfing the rest of the site! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post or PM!
