Each one has it's own personality and all of them do the silliest things. They seem to know when I have the camera because they refuse to do the 'Happy Bounce' when I'm trying to catch them doing it.

The quail is cute, however, it takes me back to the time I owned a pair of button quail. The male would crow at 3am in the morning and would not stop until I got up. The day he died of old age is one of the happiest day of my life.

Hey Up The Creek. Love the name! Yep, looks like we're neighbors, too.

Thanks for your posts. The shade is sooo important here in the south. I don't know how I would manage without it. Here's a funny. In the full of summer. I make it a point to walk underneath the shade of the trees. Where there is an open patch of sun, I run (wait, OK, I just walk real fast) through that spot, to get to the next area of shade along the path! heehee

We have the same kind of situation, a branch at the bottom with cold, clear fresh water, white sand and about 1 foot deep. We take our chairs and sit in the water to cool off. Nieces. nephews and kids of friends love to come over and play/roam the branch. It feeds into a river about 1 mile below us. Unfortunately, the coons etc. like it too. Always something.

Chickadoodle, I'm rooting you own for the "next" pen! Do I hear a little more "chicken math" in your future?

Next year I will have to get a few more turkey's and some more Jersey Giants I am not sure about which chickens to get for egg layers next... So we will see. But... I am hoping that some of my Jersey's and EE's will go broody and hatch me some so I won't have to buy many next year. And yes I did already tell my DH that if we have to add on that I would like an open air coop! lol Yes chicken math!!! I confess it got me!

Does anyone near Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair counties have meal worms for sale? Has anyone raised them for your chicks? Thanks!

Ah jeez....I am going to have to post a picture of my hubby's poultry Palace. I'm thinking that we are going to need to put in more ventilation after reading everything ya'll are talking about! But back to my original topic. My chickens are 12 weeks old. They have had ACV w/ mother in their water and DE and wood ashes in their pine shavings. I clean every weekend. I haven't ever treated with anything else. I have eight buffs ( 5 roo's - boooooo who we just decided which ones were going today and 3 hens ).

Hey, this was a first for me. We just got hit really hard with a lot of rainy/cold/hot/humid/rainy weather, and if those little cocci eggs, which occur naturally in the ground get the opportunity, they will overload an area. Just our bad luck to have little chickies brooding in with their Mom's. They were eating med feed, but of course, the Mom's wanted them to learn to scratch and peck and eat from the ground, so, they fell victim to it.

I'll probably think twice to letting them brood/raise chicks unless, I've had them on med feed for a couple of weeks. Again, it was just some really weird weather. From what I've been told, alot of folks are having to deal with this for the first time in raising chickens with Mom's in years and years.
