Two weeks. Time is flying.
That's the first time I've ever had that happen and my family has been raising chickens since before I was born. Definitely something I don't want to happen again.
Yea Raz, a real baby soon!

I've heard of the "bad egg" thing, just thought it was associated with incubating mishaps?

Had a broody hen been sitting on it?

Now I'll have the cautious heebee jeebies when collecting those eggs. . .Oh the horror of something like that happening to an egg customer.

We are about to move our 8-11 week old chicks out of the green house that we have been keeping them in and into an enclosed coop and run on grass. We have already dealt with a bout of cocciwhateverucallit and lost two chicks and I have heard that they get it from free ranging/being out on grass.

What precautions should I take or steps to take during this transition or any words of warning or advice?

I am going to post this as its own thread also but I wanted to reach out to fellwo bamians first.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi, Alex!

Welcome to BYC and the Alabama!! thread. Have you been feeding medicated starter the whole time they were in the greenhouse? Some would say to start them on antibiotics before you move them but I don't agree. If they have been on med starter, I would just feed them some yogurt or buttermilk on some bread or oatmeal or even in starter for a day or two to boost gut bugs and let them go. Watch closely for early signs of illness then treat accordingly. If the new pen has not had chickens on it before, I wouldn't worry too much. Good Luck!

My doctor is actually surprised by how active he is.

As far as I've found, the exploding egg under a hen doesn't happen very often. I was just unlucky. I wouldn't be too worried about it though, you can tell the difference in weight between one that'll explode and one that won't. The exploders are very light weight.

I've candled my silkie eggs again at 10 days. I know it doesn't happen really often but after reading Razadia post I got a little paranoid and was very careful just in case it exploded. Good new is that none of the eggs exploded

And it looks like out of 7 eggs 2 b/s and 2B are viable

. None of my white were.

So hopefully with some bit of luck I should have little greyish blue things running around in 11 days.
