How old does a chicken need to be before you can tell if its a rooster or a hen? And how can you tell? I have one that acts nothing like the others not flighty at all jumps onto my hand and lets me feed it while the others fuss over the feed that hits the ground. Im guessing they're about three weeks old I got them from tractor supply were all supposed to be pullets. Either White Leghorns or something else not sure they just got all their feathers in they are all white.

look at their combs. Cockerels will be really red quite young. Pullets redden just before they start laying. Also Cockerels tend to be more aggressive towards other chicks.

Hello and Welcome to BYC and the ALABAMA!! thread! I'm just down the interstate in Tuscaloosa, let me know if you need anything.

Mutts ($2 each or 3/$5, straight run) -- roosters were either an Easter Egger, a Black Copper Marans, or a Splash Copper Marans, hens were Easter Eggers (green, blue, pink, cream, tan/rose, pale olive eggs,) Light Brahma, Buff Orpington, Legbar, Black Copper Marans, Marans/Buff Orpington cross. Several look like they may be Blue Copper Marans.

Black Orpingtons ($5 each, straight run) -- The parents are nice breeder quality and the rooster is HUGE! Must see to appreciate.

4 buff Orpingtons and 2 giant blue jerseys
Now off to the races with building a coop...
Praying that they are all girls and that the kids don't kill any!
