So.. with it going below freezing tomorrow night, should I be worried about my almost 9 weekers outside with a heat lamp?

No, as a matter of fact, they would likely be fine without the lamp. If they have had it the whole time, though, leave it on for them.

How old does a chicken need to be before you can tell if its a rooster or a hen? And how can you tell? I have one that acts nothing like the others not flighty at all jumps onto my hand and lets me feed it while the others fuss over the feed that hits the ground. Im guessing they're about three weeks old I got them from tractor supply were all supposed to be pullets. Either White Leghorns or something else not sure they just got all their feathers in they are all white.

Last year I had 10 chicks... I kept changing my mind on possible boys. In the end, I only had one boy, nine girls.... they can really throw you off.

This year I have 2 white rocks, 4 barred rocks... so far I am thinking 5 boys, 1 girl... but you never know. They're only 4 weeks old, but I am seeing an awful lots of wattles coming in and those combs are mighty big looking. We'll see... Made sure to warn my boy to not get too friendly, because they're probably going to become dinner. He understood.



If anyone is still looking for chicks, the Ace in Helena (or well, it's True Value now) has a big tub of mixed brown egg laying pullets. The girls said they had somethingsomething reds (wasn't paying attention, fuzzy things had me distracted), dominickers and some white looking chicks. They said something about if you buy a bag of feed you get them free or something like that. Couldn't tell me a price, since they had just gotten them

Going to guess $2-3 a piece.

TSC in Montevallo was all sold out by 6pm, as usual....

I'm holding off on more chicks... so it's probably good they're out

It would've been hard to pass up mixed bantams and gold laced wyandottes.

I had them in the house until just a few days ago but in a room that the vents are blocked off and a slight draft from an outside door. It stayed around 60ish in there so they are used to that and a bit lower at night. I only put the lamp back on them for night time. They aren't huddled with it or anything so I think they should be ok. When I checked a couple hours ago it was 50 in the building.

OMG! You shouldn't have told me that!!! The place is almost walking distance from me!!!! Now I have to go check it out!!! I'm trying to be good and hold out until I find Bantam cochins or silkies.

Sure don't. There are a ton of breeders out toward Bessemmer/Hueytown though. They all seem to have a big variety of birds.

OMG!!! Should not have gone!!!! They ave assorted brown egg layer pullets!
I was good! Picked up only 1 mottled or silver laced cochin chick(maybe-all I know it's feather footed).
