ALABAMA!!

I still haven't had the chance to set any quail eggs. I was waiting until my new hens laid a few eggs to throw in so they hatch after the quail and we could find out which hen is laying, but tragedy struck a few days ago. My nieces were fighting in the kitchen an knocked something off into the bowl with the quail eggs and cracked a few. One of the eggs was smashed so bad it got all over a bunch. I salvaged a little over half the eggs (about a dozen and a half) and have pretty much had to start over collecting. I was already pushing it with some of the eggs since I only have 4 quail hens. The new chickens haven't laid since before then. I think the horses are stressing them out since they keep pushing against the pen. I know the roo isn't happy about it.

I have raised a black copper maran rooster that is 6 months old, and he is getting aggressive! He started getting mean in about two weeks. Any tips on how to keep him complacent?

Welcome, Auburntiger! There are several schools of thought on how to reform an aggressive rooster. Search the site and you will find lots of advice. The one that worked for me was to feed the rooster the treats first so that he can share them with hens. He learns to look forward to you helping him woo the girls

Personally, I think the best cure for aggressive roosters is a sharp knife and a scalding hot bath......The meaner they are, the better they taste. Seriously, don't keep a mean rooster, there are too many really good, calm, non-confrontational, protective, trustworthy, gentleman roosters around needing homes to let a mean one stay around spreading those genes to future generations.....

I appreciate the advice but I don't want to kill my maran rooster. I have heard that most maran roosters are aggressive I just wanted some advice on how to keep the aggression to a minimum. Like your advice about the treats!

I understand, believe you me, about not wanting to eat your own birds. I can send them to be eaten now, but that is as far as I have gotten toward eating my own. I have had several BIG macho BCM roosters. I have two, now. They have never even looked like they were THINKING about hitting me. If they did, they would be sold. I don't want to pass aggressiveness on to any chicks.

Maybe it has something to do with my demeanor when I am around them. I am "no-nonsense" when I am doing chicken chores. I walk with a purpose, don't slow down for chickens (they get out of my way, not vice versa) and I handle any I choose, including the roosters, when I need to. I talk to them, call them by name, but I don't baby them. They like me, because I bring the feed and treats, and they respect me in that if I want, I will dominate them. I have only had two mean roosters, and they didn't stay here long enough to procreate.

Good luck with yours. I have heard that sometimes they get better with age..........

Have you tried hanging him upside down? My mom had luck with that. Every time she went in the coop she hung the roo upsidedown. Didn't take long before he realized being mean was not the way to be. Good luck!

Walk through them (walk in their direction and make them move). Claim the hens as yours. You've got to be the alpha rooster.

Anyhoo.

The babies are hatching! Got two as far as I can see. Fluffed up and moving around under mom (little heads peep out every once in a while). She's a speed hatcher

this is the second time she hatches eggs in 19 days. She doesn't get off the nest much and it's warm.. it makes the eggs hatch faster. We have 6 eggs under her, I haven't touched them at all, so I dont know if we have duds. They're Marans over Australorps.. cute little black fluffballs. They will probably be up for sale at some point, when depends on if Ezri is a good mom or not.
