Sorry to hear. One of my biggest fears is snakes.

I looked all over, no snake to be found. I think I found where it got in, but my coop is no fort Knox by any means. Luckily it was a little cockerel and not one of the pullets.

Hope it learned that it can't eat chicks of this size and stick to the other critters in my yard (we found two toads while searching for the snake).

You'll find sneaky snake in your egg box one day...just watch out when you reach for those eggs!

Lost one of the chicks over night. I think a snake tried to swallow it. The head and neck were wet (and it was covered with ants, but I think that may have happened after the fact). I saw a small puncture wound in the neck.

So a snake hunting we will go.

Anyone have experience with snakes eating chicks? These guys are pretty big, they're 6 weeks old.

I had a rat snake eat 3 adult quail early last year and one of them was a jumbo cot. The snake that got your chick was probably on the small side. Putting lime down around where your birds are will help keep them away. No snake wants to get burned by lime.

Lime is often used in barns on the floors to keep it from smelling. I had stopped using it as it keeps the shavings from composting properly, but I still have a partial bag left to use on this snake.

No problem. We use it to keep snakes out from under our house. Too many places for them to get inside. I like snakes, but I don't want to live with them.

I have been thinking about getting a roo, however I am a bit nervous about introducing another chicken to the flock. I have 4 in the run now and am raising 3 babies (well they are 2 months) My goal is to live off the land as much as possible. Any advice on this? Also what breed would be best to introduce and how old should he be?

Also has anyone else had issues with their gardens this year? Mine started strong but ended poorly. Nothing grew as large as it normally does except the weeds and morning glories

I haven't seen any signs of snakes since I got the repellant. Plus it smells real nice. I did actually put some inside the coop, not much.but when I cleaned, I sprinkled a bit before I put down more straw and shavings. For the most part, I put it around the perimeter.
