OK can someone explain to me again how chicken math works. The hubby and I got into an argument today, because I told him I am out of feed. He said I have too many chickens.I free range so I only feed once a day and I don't think its too much. They will eat a bit then they are off on their daily chicken chores. You know, moving leaves, cleaning up below the bug zapper. things of that sort.
Our plan was to keep a small flock of 10 to 15 birds, for eggs and the occasional bird to eat. This is what I have:
7 grown hens
2 grown roosters
13 spring chicks (which I suppose technically are adults now, just not laying yet) 4 of which are roos headed to freezer camp.
12 august chicks, which I'm sure 3 are roos, but not sure about the gender of all the rest yet
4 babies I got for the broody to adopt.gender unknown on all
So that's about 10 to 15 birds, right ?![]()
Hubby just can't count!!!
Welcome Jr!
I agree with Wisher, BexB, I don't think you have very many chickens at all! You can't count the roosters and only those chickens that lay!
Oh no, Orps! I had so many roosters from my spring chickens and of my five "rare egg layers" that I ordered from Meyer hatchery, all five ended up being roosters! They are replacing them and giving me free shipping up to my original order of twelve......trying not to order twelve more, but........hmmmmm....counting all my roosters and chicks that aren't laying yet.....I don't have that many chickens!
On another, but very related note, does anyone want a free white-crested black Polish rooster? He was one of my surprise assortment of "rare egg layers" that made me so mad when he crowed! He was only a pretty bird to begin with, since they're more ornamental than anything else, but now I have no use for him since he's a boy! Plus he's my only Polish, and the others keep pecking at his head feathers, and I don't want him to end up hurt! Birmingham or Bessemer area. I can meet you in town during the week sometime.
He sure can't! That's only NINE by my count. You need a few more.
I know I am speaking out of turn, but what right does he have to decide how many chickens you have? If you wanted 100, and that made you happy, who is he to decide that's too many? This makes me mad. Do you get to decide how many ( insert DHs hobby paraphernalia here ) that he can have? Although he tried to begin with, my DH and I came to an understanding on discretionary funds. I don't complain about his four wheelers, guns, clay pigeons, greenfield seed and fertilizer, guns, club dues, weekends gone, guns, game camera's, hunting/fishing trips, etc, and he doesn't complain about my chickens. If he gets to limit my hobby, I should be able to limit his, right? At least my hobby feeds us daily and keeps me home (except for poultry shows.)![]()
It works for us.........well, for me.
Well I have a full time job, and pay any chicken expenses myself. So money is not his issue with the birds. I just don't think he enjoys them as much as I do. He sure enjoys the eggs and the meat. He will be alright. I'm not sweating his reaction this morning.
Make him a sammich
