ALABAMA!!

We got our first egg tonight! The poor thing lasted only about 10 minutes in our house due to a very nosey cat pushing it off the drying rack, but never the less--we FINALLY got one. I did notice though that the shell was pretty weak. I know oyster shells are supposed to make them stronger but I don't know where to get any. Anyone want to fill me in on stronger shells if oysters aren't an option? or maybe where to get the shell from?

oyster shell does work but not as good as layer feed so I use both and it works great. I dropped one of my eggs while picking them up in our coop and it didn't crack on the hard dirt floor from about 4.5 feet up. Another way to go about it that's actually pretty cool is scaring your chicken as soon as they are about to lay the egg and they won't kay and the egg will go through the whole process again and make a double shell egg that contains two eggs (one inside the other)

Some Walmart will carry oyster shell.
Tractor Supplies will carry it.
If there is a co-op around your area will have them.
There are tons of places online that you can order it from.
Other option is to recycle egg shells. After I eat the eggs, I wash the shell throw it in the microwave for 30sec. Then crush the shell and give it to the chickens.

I buy industrial size bags of oyster shell and they last for months. I'd say per bird give 1 pound of shell (roosters included) per week-two weeks but at the moment a 50 lb bag lasts me a little less than 5 months with my adult birds. It will be reduced when I move in my chicks.

Uh.... That could kill a chicken... I wouldn't really recommend playing with nature like that

It could get stuck and kill your bird.
