ALABAMA!!

I just looked at some Dorkings and they are really beautiful birds. Nice call Kimberly!

Chickhead, they are the perfect utility bird with "more white meat around the wishbone" and a gourmet meat quality. Beautiful to boot

And despite being huge, they are excellent foragers and so much more demure than those can be evil RIR or really any hatchery breed (color).

Thank you all for the reply, I am still looking for some chickens. Smiths station is very close to Ft Benning GA. As I stated I am a noob so dont know much, how do we know if a chicken has been vaccinated and waht vaccines should a chicken have before I bring it home?

What city are you near Kimberly? What other birds, besides Dorkings, are in your flock? And to all my peoples in Alabama, what birds have you found that do well in our brutal summers? I'm in Montgomery and have my eye on several breeds but would like to hear from everyone about their favorites.

I built this for my overflow birds while we go on vacation. It is not too secure but my LGdog sleeps under that shop behind it. It was quick, large, and cheap compared to a wooden structure of the same size. I will cover it with a tarp and install roosts. I will also be able to take it down and put it back up elsewhere after we get home from the beach.

Wow! That's nice!

What type of chicken do you have your eyes on? I think any chickens will do well in AL weather. I personally like the mild manner, ball of feather look so I have cochins, silkies and light brama. But what I'm looking for in a chicken is lawn decoration/pet. Eggs are just a bonus.

In a couple of days I will probably have a population explosion and will have wyandotte, orpingtons and some mixes added to my collections.

Those are great pics! I probly will have to get a Silkie for my wife, plus they are growing on me. I'm looking at several to pick from: Blue Isbars, Vorwerks, Brabantors, Opingtons, Swedish Flower, Exchequer Leghorns and a few others. I like your Light Bramas too. I will probably end up with 5-7 birds. It gets extremely hot and humid here. I like the eye candy but I also want birds that are good layers, hardy, friendly to people and other birds and not to flighty. The more I look, I will have to have one Silkie!

Chickhead - welcome!

None of the birds on your list are going to be easy to find around here. You will likely have to order them from a hatchery or a breeder. My advice is to just get whatever kind you can find for your first birds. Some of the best birds I have had have been mutts. Most mutt hens are good layers and if you don't like them, you can always rehome or sell them. Around here (Alabama) most people have whatever they can get at the feed store, or whatever hatches from them. You will enjoy any kind you get and have plenty of time to specialize with some more rare birds later. You say you want 7 birds........ but you haven't experienced chicken math............yet.

Continue to be ****** off at my chickens. Still eating their eggs. Found a dead silkie chick in the coop fully formed. I believe they destroy the egg killing the chicks. Looks like they are still :(targeting the silkie eggs. Going to move what I have left of the silkie into the incubator. :(. Hatching date is Sunday

Are they getting enough protein? May you could separate the Silkies?
My coop is divided I have fence wire run inside my coop to keep part of it from the hens. Then I can put turkey or cockerels over there. It works.

Thanks for the advice Wisher. My local Farmers market have RIR, Barred Rock, and I forget the others. I am going to my first auction tomorrow night. I'm not buying anything, just want to see what's out there. Explain the chicken math to me as I'm a newbie to the chicken fever.
