ALABAMA!!

My dad wants to trade some of my Johny Jumperx chicks for other kinds of game chickens. -.- If anyone wants to trade chicks, let me know. I have no idea why he wants to muddle the bloodlines even more, but if he wants to who am I to stop him? I want to keep my roo and dad knows I wouldn't give him up for all the chickens in the world.

Hey this is Big Steve down in Uriah in Monroe county. I hope that this finds you all having had a blessed day. I don't own any chicken's yet, but am in the research stage. I have to save up some money to build a coop and fence in a chicken run. I am looking at raising wyandottes (silver, red, bluced laced red, and partridge wyandottes) they are all so beautiful.

Let me throw out a few questions for those of you who have been raising chickens.

1. Do I need to have a light in the chicken coop at night or does that bother them?

2. Is a six foot fence tall enough to keep chickens in? I would love to let them free range, but my dog and the neighbors dog would have a field day along with the fox, yotes, and all the other stuff in the woods behind the house.

3. Anyone suggest a hatchery that has wyandottes that will let me get hens only? I would like to get about four of each subspecies.

I appreciate any help that you may be able to give.

God bless the Great State of Alabama and those fortunate enough to call her home.

from N. Jefferson Co.

My fence is 5 foot high and I have to keep my Roos wings clipped to keep him in but otherwise no problems.

A light is nice for when you need to work in your coop after dark. Like in the winter. But is not necessary. Some people light their chickens in the winter to extend the laying time. I feel that this puts an un natural stress on the hens.

Can't answer your hatchery question. Never bought from a hatchery.

Hope this helps.

Hello from So. Jefferson Co.

1. A light is not necessary, but it could be nice when you need it.
2. A six foot fence should keep your chickens in (if you clip one wing) and it will keep most predators out, (not hawks).
3. Can't help you with #3.

Alabama truly is a great state, and this forum is a great resource. Good luck

1. no light

2. no need to clip wings if you have nothing for them to launch from and have heavy breeds. I have a 4 foot chain link and they seem fine. 6 is better of course. Stockade prevents the dog nextdoor from terrorizing my birds as he can't see them.

3. Ideal, McMurray and some of the others will let you order a variety and just pullets. You may be limited to the breeds and I recommend researching the different breeds as some are friendlier than others. My personal favorites would be, Delaware, Buff Orpingtons, Wyandottes and Austrolorps. Others would be Barred Rocks or White rocks , Dominiques , Cochins and Frizzles. Oh one other thing you MUST have are some Easter Eggers or Ameraucanas for colored eggs. If you don't get any the kids won't forgive you.

I wish you happy chicken keeping.

Yes, you know me well...I would like them and yes...I will admit to drooling over those three silkies you've hatched from Claudia. Claudia, you don't know me, but you've got an admirer of your silkies in upstate NY and if you feel like parting with some eggs, I'm prepared to pay! Or rather Mr. Tim is gonna pay if he doesn't come back with some!

You mean other show people to knock off their pedestals. Just say what you mean. Claudia if you read this I'm gonna need something to breed this blue and porcelain to, so maybe you can help me make a connection to someone who might have something? Please. Two more days.
