ALABAMA!!

Not to worry Wisher1000. That was not what I meant.

I wouldn't pick or eat anything without an expert telling me that it was okay. I meant "old timers" for more of a recipe index or what is in season and local "safe" plants to collect. Just from the inquiry here, I don't know that I would trust anyone regarding pokeweed. I've researched it online and it is poisonous to humans, horses, pigs and cattle. I have read that wild birds and mammals eat it but chickens (no offense) are kind of stupid at times and I don't know that I would trust that they would NOT eat something bad for them. I think I will remove it from their area. Just in case.

Does anyone know what this plant is?
They grow about 8' tall, reddish stalk, white flowers that turn to berries that look like blueberries but smaller.
I need to know if it's ok for the birds to nibble at.
They seem to be growing all over the pasture. I'm just south of Huntsville. THANKS

Personally experience. Get rid of it. It grows like wild fire. We had a couple on our hill last year. And now, it has taken the whole area, no more grass. The wild birds love the berries (evidence is on our vehicles) and spread the seeds. We are making preparations to burn out that whole area.

Jdywntr- Wiki says birds can eat it because the berry itself is not harmful. It is the seeds that are inside the berries that are poisonous but each has a hard coating and the digestion of birds can't break it down so the seeds pass through whole.

Thamks for the info everyone. I did remove some of it since the landlord's stupid cows broke throught the fence into the birds area and broke/toppled some of them. They were great shade spots for the birds.
