ALABAMA!!

I've been up and on my feet in the kitchen since 4:30 this morning. This is the first chance I've gotten to sit down and of course, I sat down at the computer and fired up BYC.

I just want to remind everyone, including myself, what the holiday is about. I have so much to be thankful for, from family and friends, to fresh air and fresh eggs, from baby deer in my backyard to baby boys in my lap, from the will to make choices to the saving Grace of God. I could never name them all, nor could I ever express how blessed I am. I try to keep a thankful heart all year long, because I have learned that a thankful heart is a happy heart and I count that as one of the greatest feelings one can have.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends, I am thankful for you.

Welcome, BillyG! I'm in Tuscaloosa, too! Do you already have a flock or are you just getting started? If there is anything I can do to help, let me know! I am excited to have a "chicken friend" so close! Tell us about you and your chickens.

Well I no longer love Alabama.

While I can appreciate that my family is moving North, it upsets me that they are tearing down the woods behind their present home. Apparently to build more Apartments! With no consideration of present residents nor forum on whether it should be done.

They already have Apartments nearby and at the first Neighborhood watch meeting it was commented that the Apartments are the reason for the influx of crime in the area.

They live in Millbrook.

That is a shame, RancherHicks. Please don't blame the state, blame the property owners. It was their decision, and was made with no considerations for the surrounding property owners. They are likely only concerned with turning a profit and may not even be Alabamians.

The woods you are talking about are likely inside the city limits and there may be some recourse. If not, there is probably nothing to be done. What I hate more than anything is that it has caused you, my friend, to think less of your adoptive state (didn't we tell you that you had been adopted?)

Here in the south, we often err on the side of less government restrictions and sometimes it ends in events such as that one. Southerners don't like someone else telling us what we are going to do with our property (may be left over resentment from the civil war LOL JK.) We want to be in control of all decisions concerning property we have owned for generations or recently bought and paid for. It is sometimes unfortunate that the same goes for any property, even that which belongs to inconsiderate owners.

My boss and I had a spirited debate on this very subject last week. I can understand zoning laws and codes in town. I can understand neighborhood covenants established prior to selling lots. What I can't understand is anyone outside my property lines determining what I can and can't do inside the lines (that are not illegal, unhealthy or that may cause physical damage outside the property lines.)

I hate that the woods are being destroyed. That is not the decision I would have made, but if the people around me are allowed to stand in the way of my cutting down my woods, they could also get together and decide that I should cut them all down because they harbor wild animals that may spread disease. The good comes with the bad. It means that I can buy 20 acres in the country and build a $300,000 house just to have someone else buy the 20 acres one one side and build a hog farm, and on the other side for a trailer park. Both of those would be for profit to feed the families of those owners. Who would I be to decide how they make their (legal) livings?

Where does that power stop? In rural Alabama, it stops at the property line.
