Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

Paula, the farm is the one by the airport.

Carmen, my friend in Girdwood will take 200# too, and she MAY be able to get us a good deal on fishmeal from AMF. She has a retailer account there, she's going to check it out tomorrow and see what the price break is with just her retailer account, and also for bulk orders. I will let you all know!

We would likely take several hundred pounds, though I would not be surprised if we did a full ton.
I love BF, but we scrape to meet ends around here as it is, so every little bit helps.

I'd be interested if I had room to store all of it.

I'd have to get a ton to make it worth the gas to come up (it's $10/50# sack down here). And I can only fit a half-ton in my husband's truck.

Okay, I just got off the phone with the farmer. He has the barley boxed up in one ton boxes on a pallet that he could easily load on the back of a truck or a trailor. The boxes are about 4x4x5...standard pallet size. It is my turn to go get milk for the co-op so Tracy and I are going to take both vehicles (mine for milk and hers for barley) and go by the farm tomorrow late morning. However, he is happy to let ya'll bag your own any time that suits you and works as far as him being there. He has no peas but does have a small amount of oats. I didn't ask the price. Tomorrow is really short notice to get all of yall together, but there is still strength in numbers and it would be worth getting together to have a bagging party. I feel sure between everyone that y'all would be buying over a ton and could get the lower price.

Tracy and I plan to sprout much of what we get throughout the winter like Tori does.

Tori, do you feed any animal protein in addition to your sprouted barley? Can you pull a trailer and be able to carry the whole ton?

Paula, do you think sprouting your barley might take the place of alfalfa this winter. Wouldn't that also boost the protein content as well as supply other vital nutrients?

Rachel, if your friend could arrange a lower price on fish meal that would be terrific. Would you mix that with barley or feed it separate?

Does anyone know where to get woven plastic (like at Budget) bags to bag it up in? Tracy's husband tossed her bags. Ive been saving mine, but she needs some.

Contact info for the farmer: His name is John Phone: 745-7327 Go into Palmer from the south and turn right on Artic. Go three streets and turn right on Denali. Go 2 blocks and turn left into driveway. His place is about a block and a half down that driveway.

My research on sprouts, is that they are 75% lower in carbs then the original grain.
I learned this when I was making my own sprouted flours.
I think they would serve very well as a sub for alfalfa, if they were allowed to get green.
I have around 40 ( need to go out with a flashlight at night and get an accurate count soon) chickens, so I would need to think about making the time to do that.

I can be there tomorrow, just let me know what time. I was going to go by whatever Paula and Donna do as far as the fishmeal goes since they already feed it. I think ideally I would just go ahead and mix up fairly large batches with barley, a bit of oyster shell, BOSS and the fishmeal. I BELIEVE Animal Food Warehouse has the bags, but I also looked up approximately how many pounds of dry grains my plastic tubs hold. Would that be acceptable to all of you or should I bring some feed bags to measure with and dump those into the tubs?
