Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

A number of things, mostly to let them settle a bit after being tossed around in transit. This really helps if the airsack becomes detached at all, and things have a quiet time small end down to orient themselves, and get the airsack where it should be before they start incubation. It helps get the temp steady in the egg too.

Now, could these be placed under a broody hen too?

Donna, you GOTTA come and see all the baby ROOS!! They're ALL now integrated into the coop with the older birds and last nite I was in sitting with em and one of the packing peanut roos fluffed it's feathers at one of the older Norwegian roos.. He just looked at him sideways and pecked him on the head. Dang kids....

I have a VERY gentle and sociable bunch of chickens....so far!

That's good WW! Yes they can go under a broody. You'd have better luck that way but none of mine are inclined at present. I have one that MIGHT be, but don't want to take a chance on her dedication with these.

Can't say as I blame ya!

I've been thinking about the Russian Orloffs... that I should get some in Nov/Dec so that they start laying in the Spring... It's not a problem keeping them warm because of the brooder (freezer) I have. What's your thoughts? Is it better to ship birds in then or during summer?

If you have a place for them I'd get them as soon as you can. that way you'll have them laying in the summer maybe.... Problem is, you can get eggs then , but most everyone stops sending live chicks til late winter...you'd have to check on that though.. I may be wrong.

It all depends WW, we raised New Hampshire reds (roosters) last year for meat and they were 6 months old when we butchered and were
nothing what we had expected.......

Here's the little Wheaten that was my computer buddy until he got banished from the house.

This is Adobe....hes a Wheaten Marans...I was sure hoping he was a she, but it never works like that does it! He'll need a home sometime in the near future if
anyone is looking.
