Thanks!!! I love threads that go all over the place. Ken has often spoke of moving to Alaska - not quite sure of his reasons yet!

Easy. Less people, more critters

How does everyone here freeze their birds? Ziplocks? Freezer paper? Vaccum sealer? And do you do them whole or part them out? Has anyone tried freezing in water?

Wolfwoman, where and what is this store you speak of? Do you tan hides? I need to learn. My next litter of Rex rabbits will be kept until they get a prime coat...thinking some nice mittens and hats would be nice!

I am in Chickaloon... Chickaloon General Store, MP 76.3. I don't tan, but I have someone that does tanning for me in Washington. Rex bunnies would make nice hats and mitts!

Vacuum sealer, whole and parts.

Are there any USDA inspected poultry processing facilities in the state? I have a lot of ties with some restaurant owners that would LOVE locally raised chickens (and rabbit) but I've had no luck finding a processor. If there isn't one, maybe we need to get together and co-op on a mobile processing unit. We could probably even get grants, I bet the Ag Extension Service would be very helpful. These have been phenomenally successful in other states.

I'm in Sutton, just up from Palmer. Did a little research, I guess there is no USDA Poultry processor in the entire state?! But...what about Triple D, don't they sell turkeys? Anyway, my source told me that UAF had the funds to purchase a Mobile Processing Unit, but didn't. There are a lot of grants and such out there, and I'm very enthusiastic about this stuff. The same unit could be used for both poultry and rabbits.

More about MPUs here:

I'm contacting the extension office in Palmer tomorrow. It would be good to know there are more people interested.
