Alaska Chicken Lover's Soup for the Cold!!

IIF, I know a guy up here in Wasilla that has a LOT of pullets that will be laying in the next month or so. RIRs, new hampshires, SLW, BO, BA, buff brahmas, EE and it seems like maybe something else too. He has reasonable prices, a few weeks ago they were $9 a bird, maybe $10 now. I guess Ideal messed up his order and sent his birds late so all of his regular customers went elsewhere before he got them in. There was also another lady up here that was selling off her mixed flock. She had a bit of everything including a GORGEOUS BLRW roo that I wanted...but couldn't figure out what I would do with him.

A lot of her hens are his babies. Both recently had ads on Craigslist, but if you need help finding them, let me know. The guy with a lot of Pullets in Mike, he runs Cottonwood Creek Farm.

Actually, here's the links:

Ok guys, I bought a used Little Giant incubator with egg turner (still air) at the swap meet a couple of weeks ago. This Monday will be day 14. This is my first batch ever, I did not candle the eggs when I put them in and still have not successfully candled. I am SURE not all the eggs are even fertile. Some of them are quail eggs I got from another lady at the swap meet. There have been temperature and humidity issues all along, but my little thermometer is showing the temp hovering at 100 degrees the last week or so, and my humidity has stayed around 40, with some weirdness when it starts dropping and I have to refill the water or replenish the sponge.

1) What do you all use to candle eggs? Is there anything cheap I can pick up at the store that will require little assembly?

2) What should I do to push the humidity way up for lockdown? Set a small bowl of water in there or something?

3) If, after candling, it looks like the quail have survived to this point, do I need to separate the quail eggs from the chicken eggs before lock-down?

4) If any of these quail do hatch, does anyone want them? I have no information on them except they came from a lady named Krystal and they are little spotted eggs. They were just incubator testers, really!

Anarchy, I use a single beam headlamp. The single beam seems to work better than the multiple variety. Check the lumens too. Do it in a dark room (!) Candling we're speaking of...

A strong led flashlight is good too...
I have never hatched quail but have been told by those who have much experience that quail must not be kept with chicks as they will kill them. Quail are pretty aggressive it seems and it starts early..
That's my story, for what it's worth....

Yea same here, I keep quail and chicks away from each-other. I also have a wire seperation within my incubator just in case they decide to hatch at the same time.
You can't combine different ages or flocks of quail either. They will pick each-other to death.......I think Tori has had some success in combining quail....They are just ruthless little guys, I'm just speaking from experiance with the Bobwhites. I havent had
other breeds as of yet..... I think what you have might be coturnix?
I have a LED bright flashlight that you buy at Shucks. They are on the counter, you know, those Gimmick shelves? hehe......careful with the bowl of water idea, it's really easy for chicks/quail to be fluttering around
and end up drowning. I always use sponges/wet paper towel etc.... to adjust humidity. Remember its not how much water you have in there, its the area mass of the water....I also have a syringe with a long tube on it so that I don't have to open the bator to refill it, if it needs filling. It's usually best to try it out before you get the eggs into it....ahem......
