ughh i hate my cshools computer it blocks your images.i candled 2 days ago and everything looks very good. i started with 17 my hen broke one and i threw away 4 bad ones
Good morning all... I missed a rousing round of conversation last night, I see! I had a customer come by last night for five six-week old Delawares, but wound up giving them the $5 tour and answering about an hour's worth of questions. They were SO nice...
But I was drained after and just vegged.
So, update this morning... Deb first... bad news is that #4 hatched, but did not survive the night.
She looked like a blue!! I'll take a photo, but very silvery instead of black. I'm very bummed. I think she lost too much blood ~ her abdomen just wasn't quite all the way closed. The good news? The first three are up and at 'em, fluffy, and will come out today. The better news? #5 is pipped... Aimee, this is 2 days past their due date, so DO NOT GIVE UP ON THEM.
I also woke up to 8 Orpington chicks, one more is pipped... pretty good for me with shipped eggs... I've always had good luck with Christina's eggs (she's in WA).
This will be a nice addition/major improvement to the stock I already have. I'm very excited for next season!
That's a bummer on #4....I wonder what the blue was possibly from? Maybe this new set of birds (your boy and my girl) are throwing blues?? Now you got me wondering! So you still have 4 more to go?
I'll be highly disappointed if I now have a bird who is throwing blues after sending off for eggs!!!
Well, #5 is out, and very weak. I have her propped up in a carton with a splash orpington that has a very large buddha belly going on! LOL! The other 4 are not showing any signs of life, but I will candle again soon.
Here are pictures (warning! dead chick photos!) of #4, Deb... she's dry. Still slicked back, but dry and the silvery color is not a reflection from the flash. I don't know what to tell you... (I posted a thumbnail in case someone didn't want to look.)
Here's the pair of now 10 week old BCMs from my flock...

Aside from Animal Food Warehouse, you might give Alaska Mill and Feed a call. It's a possibility too. And don't worry about doing your own hatching. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here more than happy to give you info and morale support
