Deb, its all yours that are hatching. It was one of Ashia's that broke last week, (hen cull, I am sure) and then another of hers feels heavy still. I think a no go.
I am going to set up a bright candler in a bit, to see if I can see in that one thats heavy.

Oh goodness, I hope he's not another one of these ones that can't walk!.....Is he just unstable?
It scares me when they are in that position after that last little one.

So excuse my ignorance on the subject

But I thought I'd post here since I'd have plenty of fellow Alaskans able to educate me a bit. I have been reading on here about peoples problems with mites and lice and whatnot in their flocks. What kinds of pests do we have to deal with up here and what can I do to prevent such problems in my mini-flock? ANY advice is very much appreciated, I am a newbie and learning more everyday. Thanks!!

No idea. I will give him a few more hours to see whats up.
Do you think you might have some odd genetics happening in your flock?

He's hanging in there I have him separate as the others were dancing all over him.

Naaaw, It's just something that happens from time to time. Aktomboy had one
like this a while back and said it recovered. We only gave the one we had about 3 days before
he was culled so I don't know if it was the same thing or not.....The other one with leg problems
was from eggs shipped up.

Oh, good to know. Do you want me to hobble him in the morning, if its not better?

Busywoman, I'm in Alaska, too, but also new to chickens. I too have looked at pages for mite photos. I've learned that chickens take dust baths to control pests and that many recommend putting some diatomaceous earth in the mix of sand, dirt, some wood stove ashes. I called the feed store and they do have one or five pound bags of the stuff, so I'm going to get some. I put this mix into a plastic dish pan on the floor and as they are getting older, some have "discovered" the thrill & use it. Others prefer bathing in the pine shavings in the coop. There are several kinds of mites and I'm a bit unsure where they might get them. I think there are some on our mice/voles etc. I know to check two places for two different kinds of mites - one is called scaley (sp? scales) leg mites and their legs get puffy & very roughed up looking. The other kind lurks near the egg/poop hole so you get someone to hold the bird while you look closely (probably with a magnifying glass) to see tiny insects around that area.
