How are last year's d'Uccles doing?

After feeding our broody tonight, I carefully checked 4 of the eggs. They feel so different. A wee bit lighter, and the weight is distributed differently.
And when I set them on the floor, boy did they start rocking

Now we just have to get through Sunday. Monday morning marks 21 days.
Oh boy, I am on the edge of my seat. Not good for my poor adrenals

My first "test" hatch was about 33%... several went to the hatcher, then quit. But, I am not a quitter, so I followed it up with another tray of eggs. And another. And another is building to go in on Wednesday.

It's still so cold, fertility isn't the best. But give it a few more weeks...

My friend said the silkies have started laying. I am hoping to get some of the eggs to incubate for her. I decided to go with the basic Buff Orp so AKTomboy has the BBS Orps. My daughter got all of Gail's d'Uccles due to Gail being allergic and their eggs are in the bator now. Funny how the world turns. I have delivered 2 goats to Gail and Don and bought horse fence panels from them. They are a regular stop on the way to Anchorage just to say hi. You are all such neat people I hope to get to meet you some day.
How is your flock doing? Great pics of your chix!
Is that your husband that set me straight on the time zone stuff?​

Based on the markings (white spot on head) they would be roos correct?

I hope somebody answers this tomorrow. I'd really like to know more about which ones you can sex and how. I didn't know you could sex barred rocks at all. I know about the Favs - that's it.

@ Holly ~ no, hubby is AK-Bird-Brain. Bird-Brain is Carmen.

The flock is doing well. I'm finally getting to the point where I think I have enough birds! LOL! (Is that really possible?)

Sexlinks are determined by color, too... I have Delaware hens under a RIR roo... the red chicks are girls, the whites are boys. Works like that for the other sexlinks, too.

I know this sounds funny, scientist that I am, but I've tried the old-wive's tale about sexing a chick by placing them on their back in the palm of your hand and I'm convinced that it works somehow. You cup your left hand over the the chick sitting in your right hand, then flip them over, keeping them trapped (gently) until they stop struggling... when you pull your right hand away, the girls will just lie there, and the boys will pop up almost immediately. I don't know if it makes a difference how cold your hands are, or when you do it, but I've tried it on the chicks that I KNOW the sex of, and it really seems to work. It's "woo-woo" stuff, like dousing for water or pipes (which I've seen first hand and it's spooky!) but I will sometimes use it as a double check.

After they're a week old it doesn't seem to work anymore. Day-olds are the best. All I know is I suck at sexing chicks using the vent-method as my eyesight is starting to fade, and using several tricks I've managed to be right most of the time.

Sexing Barred Rocks-
Hens will have much darker legs, and the spot on their head will be very small and will be a perfect circle. At a few days old you look at the ends of their feathers. Even are male, uneven are female. After a week or so it’s hard to tell.

with them being a cross however, I am not sure this is accurate.

those are my F1 (first attempt) for making Columbian Rocks....But they all 4 have feathered Legs, pretty silver feathers.
even if they turn out to be all roos, they are not going anywhere..... I will keep them, they are the first born here.

And I know that I just found this thread and I'm not from Alaska, but I have baby pictures anyway and thought I would share them! Today, Ivory (my only spoiled little chick, born on 1/29/10, Splash Cochin/Buff Orpington mix from our own chickens) is 9 days old!

She has just recently started growing wing feathers and has gotten a lot bigger. She is so hyper and energized, too!

Right now she's taking a nap next to me after following me around all day. She likes chasing my feet when I'm walking around.

And for some reason, not sure why, when I put my hand into her brooder box, she will run up to it really fast and peck it. She does it every time! I don't know if it's signs of aggression/dominance (if she's a rooster, I can't keep her!

And I couldn't stand to give her away. She's like my little baby and she thinks I'm her mother hen.

) Or maybe it's some kind of a greeting for me? She does it to anyone who reaches into her box. She will only do it once (she won't like attack me repeatedly lol). Or maybe it's just a little ambush/game of tag kinda thing, like she's playfully attacking my hand.

So if anyone has any idea why she does this, let me know! She's such a sweet little chick!

OK now for pictures....... (these aren't as recent...they were taken when she first hatched and when she was about 4-5 days old.)

Just hatched:

All dry and fluffy!

She has feathered feet and a gold/brown colored "mask" on her face. So far her wing feathers look like they may have a pattern on them...they look gold/brown/gray. I wonder if she will be a gold/gray Splash color?

That would be interesting!


I love looking at all the baby chick pics everyone is posting! They are all so cute!

I wish they would stay like that forever. But then they grow up so fast. Ivory has changed so much already and it's only been a little over a week!
